Fungus-tainted corn a factor in Africa HIV spread?

A new study raises the question of whether corn contaminated with a fungus-derived toxin is helping to facilitate the transmission of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.


The toxins, called fumonisins, are produced by a particular type of fungus that can grow in corn after the plant is damaged by pests such as the cornstalk borer.
Fumonisins may be harmful to human health, with some studies linking consumption of the toxins to an increased rate of cancer of the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat to the stomach.

In the new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers looked at whether there may be a relationship between HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa and general consumption of foods prone to contamination with fumonisins or other fungus- produced toxins (known as mycotoxins).


Using data from the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization, the researchers found that as sub-Saharan countries' per-person corn consumption rose, so did HIV transmission rates.
In countries with a relatively higher percentage of Muslims -- a factor linked to lower HIV rates -- those with high per-capita corn consumption had an estimated HIV infection rate of 291 per 100,000 people in one year. In contrast, the rate in those with low corn consumption was 74 per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, in countries with both fewer Muslims than average and higher-than-average corn consumption, there were 435 HIV cases per 100,000 people.


The researchers also found that higher per-capita corn consumption correlated with a higher rate of esophageal cancer. Since fumonisin toxins have been linked to that cancer, the finding serves as an indicator that populations with high corn consumption were exposed to higher levels of the toxin.


What all of this means is not yet clear. This appears to be the first study to find an association between corn consumption and HIV transmission rates in sub-Saharan Africa, lead researcher Dr. Jonathan H. Williams, of the University of Georgia in Griffin, told Reuters Health in an email.

Well obviously the Muslim countries are not as affected because they stone homers on site. It looks like God is punishing people who eat homer vegetables with the homer disease.

I've eaten meat we've raised ourselves all of my life. I don't understand your hypocrisy, it's bad to eat meat, but I do it anyway?

Oh, puh-leeze! Another victim of Bambiosis whimpers again. Humans treat their meat a lot better than many other animals.

Many carnivores bring home a live, terrified prey animal as a baby's first birthday present for their young. The junior predator is then encouraged to play with its food. Other meat eating creatures dig into some nice juicy entrails while their prey is still alive.

The Bible has very careful instructions for slaughtering animals. God only sanctions torture in hell, where everyone there deserves it for not believing in Him.

The Ancient Greeks were renowned homers, and the playwright Euripides (in "Medea") once wrote "Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad." If you would just use a little common sense the advantages of meat eating would be plain.

Meat eating is simply a division of labor, just like in any capitalist economy. Consuming and chewing massive amounts of vegetables to gain their essential nutrients is a time consuming process, not to mention the resources necessary to transport them around the country. We simply leave this process to the animals (who are already on the farm) and we take advantage of their "labor" by eating them. Throwing a few steaks on the grill leaves more time for reading the Bible (KJV1611), praising Jesus, and saving souls for God. Consider also that chewing large quantities of vegetables conditions you to seeking oral satisfactions that lead you to putting things in your mouth that shouldn't be there (where do you think the term "rug munching" came from?).

Oh spare me. Animals do not have a soul. So as long as they are killed quickly and humanely there is no torture.

Plants are living things too. Do they hurt when you pluck a tomato from the vine? What about that white milky substance when you chop a lettuce off at the stalk? Is that vegetable blood? Does the lettuce feel that? Are you torturing that poor lettuce?

Uhm I have struggled with homosexual inclination or at least mild desire, though I can say my heart was never into it, at all, what I've found is that selfish desire and ambition and greed makes people gay. And that eating vegetables has a sort of stabilizing effect on ones system compared to like sugar or very fatty food, and also a sort of cleansing effect, overall I would say vegetables are very good for us, that is just me though. I recommend having a mixed platter you know some meat, some potatoes, a little gravy lol and a bunch of boiled or baked vegetables I feel best when I eat like that, I would say eating unhealthily makes a person more 'gay' actually take it for what you will. I find honesty is what helps people best, I don't like to see bad advice (at least in my view it is bad) floating around, I like to try and clarify things so people can move forward, in a safe way..
