Default Day 16. Genesis 47-50 - 09-20-2007, 04:01 PM

Genesis 47-50

Today we end Genesis. Nearly 3000 years of mankind's earliest recorded history ends. (It's somewhat sad)

We will read:

More on the famine

Israel's blessings

Jacob's death

Joseph's death

Genesis 47

Joseph brings his family in and presents them to Pharaoh.

2 And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

3 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.

Pharaoh plays the generous host.

6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

Joseph introduces Pharaoh to his dad.

Jacob blesses Pharaoh.

The famine grew worse.

13 And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

So Joseph sells bread to the people of Egypt.

First, he gets ALL their money.

14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

This, coupled with the famine, caused the economy to collapse.

15 And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.

Second, he barters their cattle for bread.

16 And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

17 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.

What else do people have?

19 Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

So, FINALLY, he buys all the land, for bread.

20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.

Joseph (for Pharaoh) has all the money, livestock and land.

For some reason I'm reminded of 9/11 and the Patriot Act.

23 Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

24 And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

The people are working the fields for Pharaoh, 20% goes to Pharaoh, the other 80% is to be used as the next years seed, and to feed the family.

28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.

Jacob tells Joseph that he WILL be buried in the same cave as Isaac and Abraham.

Genesis 48

Joseph takes his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim in to see their grandfather before he dies.

5 And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

Jacob was losing his eyesight, just like his dad did when he gave the blessing to Jacob.

9 And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

Joseph starts to bless them.

17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head.

18 And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

As though Jacob really cares that the firstborn gets the blessing. Joseph shouldn't really be bothered by it either as he's no where near being the firstborn either.

19 And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

Joseph may be the only person who actually cares about the first receiving the birthright.

21 And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.

22 Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

Oh, until he gets an extra portion.

Genesis 49

Jacob then calls his sons (all his sons) in to be blessed.

Reuben, the firstborn, 4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch. Remember in Genesis 35:22 Reuben laid with Bilhah.

Simeon and Levi, these are the two that slaughtered the town. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Judah, 8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee.9 Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

(later when we get to Revelation this part should make a little more sense. Of course that won't be until August)

The rest of the brothers don't really get much of a mention, except for Joseph.

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.

Then he instructs all the sons to bury him in the cave.

30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.

31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

Now, why did he bury Leah in the main cave of the fathers, when he loved Rachel most?

Then he died.

Genesis 50

Joseph embalms his father, then asks Pharaoh if he can take him to the cave, and promises he'll come back.

14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

The famine is now over, all the brothers just went up to Canaan to bury their father. It didn't take very long. Why didn't they stay?

Joseph's brothers think he'll be mad at them, that he was just being nice to them for their father's sake.

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

Joseph replies.

20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

There's a lesson here. When evil happens, God will make some good out of it. God is only doing that thing to test you. Whether it be like Lot and having your entire family killed, or it may be something as simple as having a flat tire on the way to work. It's all done so God can have some good cause happen. Remember that next time you (or someone you love) has a miscarriage, or a family member dies. God will bring good out of it!

Before Joseph dies at 110 years old, he makes his brothers promise to take him out of Egypt and bury him in Canaan. Why they didn't just take him up after he died like they did Jacob, that's another good question.

So what have we learned?

1. Bad things happen to good people. God makes good things out of it.

2. Jacob and Joseph both died.

3. Jacob gave Joseph's second born the greater blessing.

4. Joseph took EVERYTHING from the people of Egypt... for bread.

Did you just summarise around half the world's history in 16 days? The unsaved trash may boast about how much beer they can drink in a year, but that is truly impressive.

My word, that God's a good storyteller. If I'm getting this right (forgive me Jesus if I make a mistake here), the first five books were dictated by God to Moses (Moses describing his own death at the end of Deuteronomy is pretty cool), so they date from, what, somewhere around 1450 BC? And the Book of Revelation was written, when, around the end of the first century AD? If I'm understanding this right, that means that GOD set up a reference that wouldn't make any sense for around 1500 years. That's pretty awesome. There's a reason why He's God.

Does anyone know when the tradition of Jewish sneakiness dates from? I always assumed they only started pinching pennies (their own and other people's) after they'd killed Christ, but this in-depth examination of Genesis is starting to make me doubt that.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Jewish... hmmm.

The word JEW/JEWS isn't used until the book of 2 Kings.

Now the word HEBREW is used in Genesis 14.

Genesis 14:13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

So, Abram was the first Hebrew.

Was Abram a penny pincher, you bet he was. He's the guy who received 1000 pieces of silver to take his wife away from Abimelech.

When you Jew someone out of 1000 pieces of silver, that's pretty impressive.

He may be the root of it.

Before Abram, we have the stories of Noah, who didn't exhibit the penny pinching qualities. Adam, who also didn't.

The first stingy person in the Bible (kjv1611) was Cain, who brought (as a gift to God) fallen fruit.

So, it's either Cain (although Abram and the hebe's aren't in his lineage) or Abram.

In my opinion.

Amen, Brother!

I've got a fellow in my church who has a grown son that decided to be an atheist. Well, God killed that son's whole family in a car crash, leaving him all alone. His wife and baby might be burning in Hell right now, but we've got a golden opportunity for some Christian witnessing, amen. We'll get that boy saved yet! HALLELUJAH, God is Good! I feel a VICTORY coming on!
