A musical question. What's a sackbut? -
12-02-2008, 10:51 AM
Daniel, chapter 3
"5": That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick.
For that matter, what's a psaltery?
Matthew:
5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled
10:21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Amazingly enough Brother, I do know what a sackbut is. Or, as we call it, shagbolt. Some people also refer to it as a sagbut, but that makes me think of something else (and sinful).
Unsurprisingly, Wickedpedantia dates it back to the 15th century
What?
THAT SHOWS YOU HOW STUPID AND UNRELIABLE THEY ARE. How can Nebuchadnezzar have heard it if it wouldn't have existed back then!
I've never heard of a psaltery though, so I assume it must be a paltry instrument.
Psalm 81:10:
I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt:
open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

I'm pretty sure one of my neighbors plays the sackbut at this time of year.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:

Right you are, Pastor. The lie-berals at Wiccanpedophile.org even say that some creatures plainly mentioned in the Bible, such as the unicorn and the cockatrice, were mythological. I have made it clear that such a nonsensical source is to form no part of my grandson's homeschooling.
This church is dedicated to preaching True Christianity™ and the King James Bible exactly as they are, with no alterations to make them more politically correct for modern liberals. Sackbut is a homer code word for gang jumping strait white Christian (Republican) men to gang rape. It has nothing to do with music. If you bring this up again Brother Eliot I will be forced to modify your account.

It isn't spelled that way anymore, Brother. The Catlicks have been at it again.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psaltery
Interestingly enough, a sackbut is described as a sliding instrument; the predecessor to a trombone, which was brass and invented in the fifteenth century. That can't, as brother WO pointed out, be correct. In fact, the word itself derives from the Old French word for homerism, saqueboute: “pull-push”.
We had better cross that passage in Daniel with the original, or we may discover that the catlicks are STILL changing the Bible around in subtile ways to promote homerism. How difficult would it be for an undercover Jesuit to get a job in a legitimate Bible printing company and change a word here and there???
Let me tell you, that if JESUS finds out abou this, there will be HELL to pay!

The sackbut of the bible was more likely something known as the "sabeca", which was of Babylonian origin and was a stringed instrument more like the modern day harp.
Landover scholars have been hard at work on this subject, mostly laboring quietly in the bowels of the University. The current theory is that the joos changed the name in an early but unsuccessful attempt to patent the device and corner the market.

Yes, I have a wood-block print of one. Did I confuse sackbut and Psaltry?

I do not believe you did, Pastor. Psaltery (or sautry) is also a stringed instrument, but is smaller; more like the lyre or zither and is thought to be the ancestor of the dulcimer. In addition to their other shortcomings (well documented elsewhere in this august forum), the Irish continue to foist the vile dulcimer on the ears of our present civilization.
The psaltery is also the precursor to the modern guitar, being meant to accompany singing (and the Psalms). There is no end to the modern corruption of this instrument. We owe much of the modern sexual perversion to the hippies who, in addition to singing folk songs protesting capitalism and the necessity of making an honest living, used it to accompany their orgies of self gratification. As a youth I witnessed the cathylick church introduce the "guitar mass" in an attempt to capture a new generation obsessed with the Beatles into their centuries old tradition of sodomy.

Please don't be silly. The very idea that a Jesuit would ever resort to skullduggery is absurd and completely without any historical precedence. Our very name is synonymous with trust, dedication and education in the name of our Lord and Heavenly Father.
As for you and your Unicorns... they are mythical creatures, much like Baptist Scholars.
This thread does do a decent job (not Job) of pointing out why one should not rely on the KJV (We like to call it the KGB ) for accurate biblical translation... chalk up another for Catholic inspiration!
Bless you, my mundane muser,

Yes, completely unjustified allegation, innit! The Jesuits are to the Vatican as the Gestapo was to the Nazis....as the KGB was to the Russkies. As biofuel is to corn flakes. As Othello was to King Lear. As "Here, kitty, kitty" is to Chinese restaurants.
