Friend Charles, you are correct that it is the Lord who will judge the wicked and send them to the bowels of Hell, but it is our duty to let them know the wages of their sin and try to turn them from the horrible collision that is coming. Do you really feel it is the work of a Christian to smile and nod while some poor fool cements his spot in Hell, rather than to try to offer guidance? I suspect you are one of those fluffy bunnies who come here calling themselves Christian, but lacking understanding of just what that means. We are God's people here, Charlie and we know our duty.

I also like Portugal and most people are very nice. They just don't like to work too hard and they say their salaries are too small. So they sometimes are rude with customers, because they don't get enough money to be completely nice. Many times I was hung up on the phone by a variety of Portuguese companies and regarding being Spanish to me is an honour to be Spanish, even that I am not from Iberia. Yet I also met Portuguese who called me "Spanish" in a ridiculous way or even with contempt.

While in Spain is very hard to get around speaking only English and a few words in Spanish, in Portugal, especially on the Azores, is quite easy to get around with English, yet they still love when yu struggle with Portuguese language for a while and then after a small "torture" they begin speaking to you with almost perfect English. So what I want to say that after a while trying to speak Portuguese and being hung up on by phone, I think it is better to learn to speak Portuguese perfectly or not move to Portugal. On the surface Portugeuse can be very nice (or rude and painfully unhelpful) and deep inside they are almost "racist" and back-stabbers. So over time I started only communicating with truly sincere and nice people, and avoid the others and avoid to purchase anything from rude and crooked businesses. The locals even told me, on many occasions that here 99% are thieves and crooks, and I do not believe this, but that's what locals keep on telling me. Still, Portugal is very nice and I especially like the architecture and their sidewalks (footpath, pavement).

I hope they appreciate our work here when they get to Hell and realize the terrible wasted lives they've had, and how awful they were trying to convince the world they were decent folk.

For me it's a mixed bag. There are very beautiful people in Portugal and they seems to be very humble and friendly and then there are BARROSO type of people, short and stocky with huge distanced eyes, mostly nice. To me it is not appearance that is so important rather than how they are inside. The way you dress is very important in Portugal. It can be simple but clean. If you do something wrong you will notice that on the local supermarket cashiers' reaction. In Switzerland they can speak straight into your eyes if you are dressed incorrectly. In Portugal people's reaction is immediate if you are not well dressed, unshaven or simply out of place. If you look like a foreigner they will speak to you in English from the very first word. Portuguese have a good sense of design,m be it architectural or garden, landscaping etc. It is not a bad country, but with challenges that can be overcome unless you are overcome by the challenges if you don't have enough patience. I can also add that their tax agency or "IRS" is one huge mess and they have no idea what they are doing, be it a for profit business or a government agency, yet you can see they are sometimes trying to make things better. So in general, to stronger willed people Portugal is a good place to live. Criminality is very low but thievery is common, although not as high as Latin America. It's really a mixed bag of all sorts. Easy to make friends superficially, but they will never invite you into their house, unless its a church. Why? One of the reasons that anyone could be a thief? Also, they may be shy to show you their house and there is nothing to be shy off as their architectural design is very pleasant and cool. So, again, it's a mixed bag, a challenge, but definitely not a shit hole like some people describe it. I've lived in much worse places such as Southern US and some other places with mostly Third World conditions. What is most important, I think, is not the levels of criminality, but the level of EVIL you get exposed to. Cause you can not be warned of evil, such as evil electrician leaving open wires for you or cutting off important wiring in the house so it catches on fire, or HVAC installers who do sick jokes on the homeowner etc. They do exist in Portugal as well, but in a very mild form, such as leaving holes in the roof for rain water to sip through in the corner so you don't notice until your flooring and furniture is already damaged beyond repair. Or leaving water to run through your electric outlet exposing you to potential electrocution. Any country has those kind of "craftsmen".
I would say those kind of evil craftsmen are skyrocketing in numbers. If they don't like you they can potentially have you dead. And that is not in Portugal, but anywhere in the world. So while every country has its own problems, Portugal has them too. And because their salaries are the same as in Eastern Europe, their workers do not try to work too hard and are often rude or impatient. Talking about people loving their job and doing things correctly and with good attitude even for little money.

Again, I am not trying to put down Portugal or any other country, but one has to expect challenges. For example: I waited 4 months to receive my Portuguese drivers license. In a so called ER they don't have even thermometers, let alone weight scales, or perhaps they do, but they save money and don't use them. Yet the doctor's visit at government hospital is either free or costs a couple bucks. Tit for tat. I have had workers who work quite hard, for better money and even if they try to nip a few minutes off work for smoking, cellphone conversations, or leave early and arrive late, there were many cases where they arrived early and left late and did not ask to be paid extra. Yet as they say most of them are thieves, and that is true. You have to watch your stuff. It all depends. Degree of evil in Portugal is not as high, I would say, although I have been told stories of extremely nasty house break-in robberies, where everything was removed and excrement was appointed on the walls etc. for expats. I think English are not very well liked, but Americans are more respected in Portugal. And they do respect other Europeans, be them from East or Western Europe. The harder life you had the more respected you are. I may be wrong, but this is my observation.

One thing I notice a lot is how the Portuguese like to lightly torture you by not being able to speak English, even with tourists, until you show them effort attempting speaking their language. They could even tell you that they hate speaking English, yet they do it quite well, as many of them have been working in the past in English or American speaking countries.

As a final word, Portugal in general looks almost like California, the quality and design of buildings, city planning beats most of the U.S., even poor people's buildings have that charm that lacks in North America and the people are slower paced and very different. Now regarding getting help on the road, unless you ask for it, they usually won't stop for you without apparent reason. And a genuine smile seems to be important as without smile they consider you are yet another depressed angry individual. Since Portuguese do not depend on their income and money as much as Americans do, they naturally are more genuine. Although keeping one's word, and fulfilling one's promise, respecting another person's property does not seem important at all. In this they match and even exceed Americans. Regarding selling drugs I have no idea, I think this could be the problem only in some cities and not countryside. Being a catholic, means having roots and deeper culture, is not necessarily a bad thing. Just have to watch out for crooked businesses, and prepare for the slight challenge in bureaucratic affairs, the rest is just fine. In general, most Americans would not enjoy living in Portugal unless they have an open mind, lots of patience, have been exposed to hard life and have few demands and expectations. This is an independent opinion of someone who is not from either Portugal or North America.

P.S. Regarding terribly wasted lives, I think Portuguese have excellent lives, they have folk dances, all kinds of cultural events, religious events, concerts, even in the smallest towns and villages. I am amazed how rich Portuguese culture is for such a small country. Really nice place to live if you enjoy rich cultural life with open and deep soul. They also love when you speak their language and are quite good genuine friends mostly. I would say, despite all the negative things in Portugal, such as needing an attorney to register a one person DBA business, which can cost a fortune, it is one of the better countries in the world, if you don't depend on a job. I must note regarding business registration, they say you can now register a business in Portugal in 40 minutes, but that is a very sad joke. Their government is clueless about their own job. The biggest pastime is hanging up on people who call them and creating intentionally failing websites. Some people I have talked to, who live here permanently, told me they gave up and just went on with their life without dealing with that failing bureaucratic apparatus where anything you do you need a special "password" which arrives (or not) in 2 months, via regular mail... Don't get me wrong, they are very intelligent, as you realize how MUCH they know about you that American FBI or CIA would be envious of. Very strong on intelligence,yet so many failing things, I thin - intentionally? I would not be surprised all residential phones could be monitored and perhaps email too? It's Love & Hate, but to me "hate" is replaced with "be aware", relax and be happy :-)
