Matthew 18:23-35
Quote:
MT 18:23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Well Missy, that's edifying, of course. But not really in synch with the free-market capitalism that our Godly Republican Party and Saint Ronald Reagan have bestowed upon this prosperous land for the last 25 years. You would have to agree.

There are times, when -- in the glory of divine revelation -- our Lord Jesus Christ spoke in metaphor. And this passage that you've quoted would be one of those times.

Following up on Brother Lee's analysis, we should always remember that Jesus spoke in parables only to confuse nonbelievers:

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Matthew 10-13

So the message of a parable is never what it appears to nonbelievers to be on the surface. In this case, the real message as a believer reads it is clear: don't lend money to Jews, since they'll lend it to some other Jews, who'll lend it again, until it gets lent so many times that it becomes utterly impossible to collect. Note also that the admonition to "forgive... every one his brother their trespasses" obviously applies only to fellow Christians, and, even then, only to Christian menfolk.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering, why did Jesus tell this parable only to his disciples, when the purpose of parables is to confuse the unsaved? The answer, of course, is that he knew Matthew would report the parable in his Gospel, thereby letting Jesus confuse many generations of nonbelievers, rather than just one. Our Lord is a subtle Lord.

So we see the moral of the story is that a person can demand repayment of a debt even after the debt has been forgiven. If the debt was re-instated was it really forgiven, or was it just temporarily set aside? It wasn't FORGIVEN if it was allowed to be reinstated!

PRAISE JESUS!!!

This parable is an excellent example of how GRACE works.

The servant didn't really deserve the Grace of the master, but the master initially gave it to him. Then when the servant went out and performed some bad actions, the master removed the grace.

35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Grace is freely given, you don't deserve it, but once it's given, it can be taken away.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

YIC
