Default Day 289 Matthew 19-20 (guest entry) - 05-06-2012, 07:51 AM

Hey guys. I'll be your study guide today for today's entry. It's a real honor to get to do one of these. I'm flattered that Brother V would trust me enough to do one.

Let's jump right in, shall we?

Matthew 19. Wow, I'm so lucky to have gotten this one.

1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

Jesus just finished telling us about the man who had to sell his wife and children because he was unforgiving. In typical rock star fashion there are throngs of people dying to get a word with the Lord.

That's when the Pharisees came to Him and asked Jesus a rather pointed question, since they obviously knew Him. He was, after all, extremely famous in His day.

3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Brother V's description of the Pharisees in yesterday's entry was spot on amazing. The Pharisees want to debate Old Testament law with Jesus.

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (Gen 2:23-24)

See Gen 2. The two shall become one flesh because the woman was created from the man's rib.

23And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? (Deut24:1-4)
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

From the beginning it was not so. Amen, thankfully there is only one patriarch of God's people that I can think of who kicked his concubine and her son out into the desert.

You have to understand that it was okay for Abraham to do it, because Moses hadn't gotten the Old Testament Law yet that said it was okay to divorce your wife.

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
See also Matt. 5 for a similar speech.

11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

I have spoken at length about this in my thread about divorce.

Jesus would rather you have your testicles removed than divorce and remarry.

13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. (See also Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17)

The rich young ruler.
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

All Old Testament Laws and sensible. Jesus is in an easy mood today. After the Sermon on the Mount, he lays out a few simple rules. Notice the rich young man specifically asks Jesus which commandments to follow.

20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions

As any decent apologist can tell you, this verse was only meant for the rich young ruler. Jesus doesn't want us to sell all our stuff. He only wants 10% of your earnings for life.

23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

What? That's a sewing needle? Not the metaphorical "eye of the needle" gate to Jerusalem that never existed? You're saying that rich people won't go to heaven? Well, that's okay. I'm not really rich. There are people who make a lot more than I do.

29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

That's right. Give all you have on earth to the LORD, because He's gonna make it up to you 100x in heaven.

30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Verse 30 really leads off chapter 20. It could have gone into the next chapter, because it really sets it up.

It's a conditional statement. God is going to give you so much in the kingdom of heaven, but..... at this point there is some controversy as to what He is precisely speaking of.

Is it foretelling the acceptance of Gentiles? Is it speaking of others who might come later like Paul who would speak with His authority (No! To accept that is to accept the likes of Joseph Smith)? Is it speaking against Catholicism's practice of making people saints?
I'll go with that last one. We will all be equal in Heaven and everyone who is saved will have an equal share in Salvation.

Matthew 20:1-16

The vineyard owner keeps hiring people throughout the day. He goes and agrees to hire each person for a penny a day for their labor.

Some started work early in the morning around 9 am. Some started around noon. Some were hired around 2 pm. The last ones showed up at the 11th hour or around 4-5 pm.

The landowner lines them all up and pays them according to who showed up last and makes a big show of paying them all the same amount.

The people who showed up in the morning didn't like that at all. Jesus, I mean the vineyard owner tells them to go jump in a lake, because they all agreed to the wage.

13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Matt. 20:17-19 never really stands out to me, because we all know what is going to happen, but it's an actual statement that Jesus is about to be betrayed and die. He knows it. They all know it.

And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Wow! He said it would come to pass and then it did! Not only do we have Jesus' resurrection. We have the prediction that it would occur. If that's not enough proof for a God mocking fool, I don't know what is.

Matthew 20:20-28 is about the mother of Zebedees children asking Jesus to make them His favorites. It doesn't call them by name, but we know who Jesus' apostles are who are the sons of Zebedee. They are James and John.

Apparently, she didn't hear the last speech about the vineyard, because she wants her sons to sit on the left and right of Jesus in the afterlife. I can just imagine our Lord with an almost sardonic half smile on his face as He asked her if she REALLY wanted her sons go be on His left and right. If she REALLY wanted them to drink of the same cup and have the same baptism as He would have.
It's almost a foreshadowing to the image of the three crosses on Cavalry.

22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Jesus then goes on to tell her that it isn't His to give even if she really wanted it for them.

23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

The Trinity is so confusing sometimes.

On the way out of this tl:dr sermon, Jesus heals two blind men, which is an almost exact retelling of an event in Matthew 9.

In keeping with Brother V's style, what have we learned today?

Divorce is wrong and evil, because woman was made from a man's rib. If you are considering divorce and remarriage, you should consider castration.

Biblical prophecy scores yet again with a perfect prediction.

Catholics fail again with their belief that some people are higher up in heaven (saints and Mary). They should accept their payment of Salvation and be happy with it.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.

This is a great project! I am new to Landover, but I will catch up on the lectures as soon as possible!

"And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead." (Acts 10:42)

"Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up." (Hosea 13:16)

It’s funny how you skipped over the verse where Jesus (pigs be upon him) promises Judas a throne in heaven.

Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

John 6:70 says Jesus (pigs be upon him) knew from the beginning that Judas was bad. Mark 14:21 says it would have been better if Judas had never been born. Acts 1:18 says Judas committed suicide. These things imply Judas went to hell. But then there is Matthew 19:28 and 1 Corinthians 15:5 which says Jesus (pigs be upon him) appeared to the twelve (not eleven like it says in John 20) after he supposedly rose from the dead. These things imply Judas went to heaven. How do you explain these contradictions? Surely you must accept your gospel is corrupt.

The Holy Bible has no contradictions.

Acts 1:15-26
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Matthias was elected to replace Judas. Hence, 12 thrones remained (just one person sitting on one of the thrones was exchanged).

What about Paul? That gives you 13 apostles and only 12 thrones and it doesn't change the fact that he promised Judas a throne.

So it simply means that he's an apostle without a throne. What's the big deal?

Show me a passage in Matthew 19 which states that Judas was present when promised the 12 thrones (which would imply that he was going to be sitting on one).
