Default Day 284. Matthew 4-6 - 09-27-2011, 06:35 PM

Matthew 4-6

Matthew 4

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

There are differing views on exactly WHY Jesus was tempted. We'll get to one view for each time it is presented in the gospels.

The first view is that the devil was trying to make Jesus sin.

The first temptation:

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

The thought about sinning is that the devil was attempting to make Jesus commit gluttony.

Jesus responded with Deuteronomy 8:3. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

The second temptation:

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

The second sin offered is hubris; or pride, arrogance.

Jesus; response was Deuteronomy 6:16. Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Imagine the surprise of the people when they were going about their daily business, and suddenly they look up on top of the temple and they see two men up there, one telling the other to "Jump, jump, jump". I'd bet there were people in the crowd chanting the same thing. Everyone loves to watch a jumper.

The third temptation:

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The final sin offered was avarice; or greed.

Jesus again responded with Deuteronomy. Again in chapter 6, verse 13. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Jesus was tempted, but he didn't give in. Praise him.

The devil left, and angels came and ministered to him. Then John the Baptist was put into prison, so Jesus went to Galilee.

13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

This is in reference to Isaiah 9:1,2. 1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Then Jesus started his ministry. Then he started collecting disciples.

18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Disciple #1. Simon Peter
Disciple #2. Andrew

21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

Disciple #3. James (Zebedee)
Disciple #4. John (Zebedee)

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Remember, Jesus was given the myrrh as a symbol of his healing powers.

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

Jesus cured, diseases, torments, possession, insanity, and palsy.

Matthew 5

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

Jesus grew tired of the crowds (Rock stars tend to do that, they value their private time) and he retreated to his entourage.

He then gave his disciples the Beatitudes. The beatitudes are retellings of Old Testament ideas, except they have been made more important than before. Jesus took an idea, and turned it into a Mission Statement.

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Poor in spirit" doesn't mean lacking faith, it means people who are poor and have resigned themselves to always sucking at achieving wealth. "Blessed" means "Are actually wealthy". So Jesus was saying, that the people who are beggars are actually ALREADY rich. (The first beatitude doesn't have a direct link to any exact old testament verse).

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

This is a retelling of Isaiah 61:2.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

“They’re a bunch of meeks. We’ll kick their asses and take it back," Denis Leary.

This is a retelling of Psalm 37:11, Isaiah 61:1, and several other verses. If applied to Deuteronomy 4:1 and 16:20, it deals with the Hebrews taking back the holy land.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

This one has images of Isaiah 55:1, Jeremiah 31:25 and Psalms 107:9. If you want spiritual fulfillment, you will get it. Attention atheists, did you see that? Why are Christians happy with the answers that they look for in religion? Because they get it!

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Psalm 37:21-22 has a similar thread. In fact, Psalm 37 is a good primer for the beatitudes.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

This is believed to have been taken from Psalm 24:3-5.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Peacemakers are the pussies who don't fight, it's the people who break up the fight.

There isn't really an old testament correlation to this verse, although Pslam 37 has some stuff that's pretty close.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Verse 10 is considered the 8th beatitude. Verses 11 and 12 don't follow the "blessed are (insert); for they shall (insert)" so it isn't considered the ninth beatitude. I think of it as a continuation of verse 10. Because the persecution of Christians is such an important thing, that Jesus needed to remind the people that it's important.

Remember, if you aren't offending the unsaved with your Christianity, you are doing it wrong! If you tolerate sin, you are no better than the sinner.

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

You will often hear "christians" say that the Old Testament law doesn't matter anymore. That Jesus did away with it. That's horse phoey! Jesus himself said he wasn't doing AWAY with the law. As long as people break the law, it is not fulfilled. Jesus paid the price, but the law still exists!

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Breaking any of the rules (even the smallest one) is just as bad as breaking the biggest one. Driving one mile an hour over the speed limit, is just as bad as murder!

Jesus then goes on to expand the law. He doesn't do away with it! He makes it more controlling. Jesus wants big government! He's got the biggest big brother (your heavenly father) watching you break those laws!

21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Jesus said that being ANGRY is just as bad as murder.

27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Just thinking about having sex with a woman is as bad as actually doing it!

You probably didn't even do a good job in your vision! You thought you satisfied her, but it was over way to quick anyway.

So, how to get around the adultery rule? Adultery is stealing of another man's property, his wife or his espoused. The price for that woman has already been paid to the father. You are then taking another man's property. To not commit adultery, you should only look at women who are neither engaged nor married. So, single ladies who aren't dating anyone it's ok.

Jesus then said that divorce is bad, unless the woman already cheated on him. That if you remarry a woman who is divorced, for any reason other than she cheated, that the woman then becomes an adulteress.

Jesus then said to not swear, to only say "yea, yea" or "nay, nay". You don't need much more than that anyway.

He then said to turn the other cheek, and not do an eye for an eye.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Jesus was a fan of shocking people. The people were looking for revenge against the Romans, and he's there saying to be nice to them.

Matthew 6

Jesus gives a list of ways to not appear pious. He was against people being "SHOWY" in their faith. He wants people to be Christian without having to have a bumper sticker on their car. He wants others to know that you are a good person by your actions, not because you wear a cross around your neck, or have a WWJD bracelet. He wants ACTION. It doesn't matter if you are a whore with a cross around your neck, you are still a whore. It doesn't matter if you are a True Christian ™ without a cross around your neck, you are still a True Christian ™. If people don't look at you and think, "wow, he seems like a christian, but i've never seen him wear a cross and his car doesn't have a Jesus fish on it", then you are probably doing it wrong.

The list of Jesus wants:

1. Give your offerings in secret, don't make a show of tithing, or offerings. You should not have a large check ceremony when you make your offering. Leave that to the lottery.

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

2. Pray in private, don't make a big deal of it in front of others.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

3. Be original in your prayer; don't say the same thing over and over. Jesus then offers the Lord's Prayer. Which is odd that, he says don't use vain repetitions, and then goes and gives the prayer that has been said the most by christians ever since.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

4. Don't bore God with your "please can I have a pony" prayers, he knows what you want, and he'll give you what you need (sometimes, he'll give you what you deserve).

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

5. Don't make a show of fasting; clean yourself up, and look nice.

6. Don't worry, be happy.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

7. Be what God wants, the rest will take care of itself.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

I like to think that everything will always work out. God will make it happen. I may not eat today, but some day I will eat. I may not sleep today, but someday I will sleep. Money may be tight, but I've made it this far. Everything will always work out. Sure, someday I will die, but up until then, things might be slightly uncomfortable every now and then, but everything will work out.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

So what have we learned today?

1. Jesus was tempted, or attempted to be tempted.

2. Jesus knew him some Old Testament, as did the author of Matthew.

3. Jesus doesn't like hypocrites, or people who make a show of their "faith" when they don't really have faith.

I am always inspired how Jesus called upon His savior (which is Himself) for help to resist Satan's temptation (which Jesus and 1/3 of God knew were coming) It shows no matter who you are, even the all powerful creator of the universe, you can count on Jesus help and love.

Nonsense! When Jesus says blue, he means blue. When Jesus says wine, he means wine. When Jesus says "his brother" he means "his brother". It's amazingly simple actually.

Freedom means voting for Donald Trump!
To most "Christians" The Bible is like a license agreement. They just scroll to the bottom and click "I agree". All those "Christians" will burn in Hell!

It's all the same sentence, so no need to repeat it (again).
