Default Day 301. Luke 13-15 - 07-22-2014, 10:32 PM

Luke 13-15

1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

Apparently, Pilate sent some soldiers into the temple and killed a bunch of Galilaens while they were worshiping.

2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?

3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Mingling the blood is apparently a bad thing. The Galilaeans blood was mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. It's sort of an insult. Oh, you were making a sacrifice of blood... here put some of your own blood into it.

As to why the people were killed, some believe it was bacuase they had refused to pay taxes, so Pilate had them executed.

4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

Jesus then compares those guys being killed to a bunch of people who died in an accident.

5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

His moral was, you don't know when you are going to die, but you are going to die. You have limited time to repent of your sins, so you should do it now. It doesn't matter if you die by Pilate sending troops, or if you are crushed in a building accident, everyone is going to die.

6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

So, the guy killed it, because that's what Jesus would do.

7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

But the guy had a smart employee, he said, let me see what I can do. So, he cleared out the undergrowth and put some fertilizer on it, and they waited to see if it would work... we don't know if it worked.

Jesus heals a woman who was all hunchbacked, and others were pissed that he did it on the sabbath.

So he's like, hey, you have an ox, do you take the harness off the ox on sabbath? do you water it on sabbath? isn't it nicer of me to take the burden off a person on sabbath, that what you do to your cattle?!?!?!

Luke 14

2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

(of course it was on the sabbath)

Dropsy is an old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water; modern term is edema.

3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

No one answered... so Jesus healed the guy.

Then he talks about having oxen again. Jesus really jumps around with his analogies. Why does he never tell any carpentry stories? Is he trying to leave that part of his past behind? We know he doesn't like to go to Nazareth, but why does he never really talk about making tables or book shelves?

12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

Jesus says, if you are going to throw a feast, don't invite the people who feast all the time, invite the lesser, the poor. The people who will appreciate it.

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

The rich make excuses as to why they can't come. If you want to have a good party, invite the people who have nothing else to do. Do you make excuses as to why you can't party with Christ?

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

In reference to the above dinner party, this verse makes more sense. I've always understood it before, to be saying that If you are happy with your life, you don't need Jesus in it. If you don't hate your life so much, that you are willing to make a complete change, then there no sense in trying to be a Christian. Until you can look in the mirror and say "I hate this thing that I am" you won't be able to make a change. You can't start over, until you have nothing.

Those are the people Jesus asks to his table. You have to be at the lowest of lows, otherwise, you will find an excuse as to why you won't change. In verses 18-20 we find the excuses, I just bought a house, I just got some ox, I just got married... I can't do it. Are these the same excuses that you make as to why you can't do things.

Hey, do you want to play softball tonight? I can't the wife won't let me.
Do you want to go have a beer after work? I can't I have to take the kids to soccer practice.
Hey, do you want to go to heaven when you die? I'm kind of busy right now, I might be able to pencil you in for next month sometime.

Oh, look, Pilate sent guys to kill you. Hey, a building just fell on you. Jesus is all about the DO IT NOW! Don't wait for tomorrow.

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

If you aren't at your lowest, then you need to drop everything, get rid of it all, and just do God's work. Kind of like those idiots who followed Harold Camping. They at least did Luke 14:33. They dropped everything to follow. Are you a better or worse christian than those m0r0ns?

Luke 15

1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

Jesus tells a parable of a shepherd who has a flock of 100, and loses 1. The shepherd finds the 1 and is happy, and has a party (probably kills the 1 to celebrate, but that's a different story).

10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Go back to Jesus, the angels in heaven will be happy for you!

Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son.

Kid asks the father for his inheritance.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

As we in Landover call it, Testimony Enhancement!

So the kid blew it all on strippers, and hookers, and gambling, and eating, and drugs and alcohol.

He takes a menial job and winds up eating leftovers from the pigs. He's like, i'll go work for dad, the servants there at least have bread and don't eat the pig slop.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Dad's like your back, it's so great to see you, i've been watching you on facebook, and you've done some great things. I always hoped you'd hook up with the weather girl. You were so good, why did you waste your talents?!?!?!

SHADDUP DAD!!

The other brother who never left is like, wtf?

29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

you thought i was kidding about the hookers.

31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

I still love you, but hey, your brother is back, be happy!

So what have we learned today?

1. It's ok to do work on sabbath.

2. Jesus is an equal opportunity healer.

3. You've got to truly bottom out before you can fully appreciate what the LORD is going to do to you.

I tried that out once. It didn't take too long for the Holy Spirit to come onto me and assure me that God wanted me to keep all my stuff anyways. He was just testing, to make sure. Something to do with my own innate righteousness exceeding that of others, or something or another. Something about not needing to put me through the wringers. I forget the details. Praise Him for letting me keep my stuff. I'm not sure what everyone else's excuse is, though.

II Thessalonians 1:7-9
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power

The man who is being progressively sanctified will inescapably sanctify his home, school, politics, economics, science, and all things else by understanding and interpreting all things in terms of the Word of God and by bringing all things under the Dominion of Christ the King. -R.J. Rushdoony

The answer to that is simple, Jesus knew what kind of reference to playing with wood people would get in the future while they were talking about him playing with his wood, so he did the smart thing and used a different reference. One that no one can mince words with and manipulate. Because Jesus was smart enough to avoid that verbal trap in the future, no one can say, "But Jesus played with his "wood" I should too!" Besides, Jesus was humble, he has no need to glorify building stools, benches, cabinets, or anything else. I wish more people were like him.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

I think Jesus turned away from that kind of carpentry to do home redecoration:

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2

On the whole, though, I think Jesus chose to carry on His real Father's family business rather than that of His adoptive father. Not that Jesus was ashamed of doing some woodworking every now and then. If He wanted to hide it, why did He let Mark mention it?

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Mark 6:3

Not that it's my place to tell Jesus what to do--if He wants my advice, He knows where to find me--but, if I had something to hide and I were inspiring a Bible, I know that I would edit out the embarrassing parts.

Just for the record, the Bible is very clear on this point. Jesus did NOT masturbate:

For even Christ pleased not himself.... Romans 15:3
