Default Day 274. Habakkuk 1-3 - 02-11-2011, 07:26 PM

Habakkuk 1-3

Habakkuk 1

1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

Not much is known about Habakkuk. It's claimed he lived in the middle to end of the 7th century, during the reign of Jehoiakim. Tradition says that Habakkuk was the son of the Shunamite woman in 2 Kings 4, who died and then Elisha laid on the dead boy and brought him back to life. This is all guessing, because no one really knows who Habakkuk was, and it's a nice story to link him to Elisha. No one even knows what his name means, it either means "embrace" or he's named after a fragrant plant.

2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!

What is known about Habakkuk is that he questions what God does.

God answers him:

5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

God's going to do something that Habakkuk won't believe.

6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not their's.

7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.

The Chaldeans came from Babylon. The 11th dynasty of Babylon was known as the Chaldean Dynasty.

8 Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.

There's the Babylon eagle again.

9 They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.

10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it.

God says he's going to send them to do his destruction.

11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god.

Then, instead of thanking the REAL God for making it happen, the Chaldeans are going to worship their previous god.

Habakkuk responds:

12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.

He can't believe that God is actually going to use them as the instrument for his judgment.

13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

Habakkuk complains that God can't have any sin in his presence, how is he going to be able to stomach having the dirty Chaldeans doing his work?

15 They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad.

16 Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous.

Habakkuk says that the Chaldeans are taking over places and they revel in their accomplishments, without giving full credit to God who allows it to happen. He just can't believe that God is going to allow the unclean Chaldeans to take over.

Habakkuk 2

Habakkuk waits for an answer from God.

God responds:

6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!

Even though Babylon won that war, they ultimately will be destroyed.

8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

What would the world be like if the Chaldeans worshiped God like they were supposed to, after they carried away most of Israel?

God, then taunts the idols of Babylon.

18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

An idol doesn't do anything. But God is real.

20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

Habakkuk 3

1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth.

Based on Habakkuk 3, many scholars believe that Habakkuk was a temple Levite. Chapter 3 is a song.

2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

He asks God to be a little nice.

3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.

The last time we say the word "Selah" it was in Psalms. It pretty much symbolized the use of a cymbal crash, or possibly a guitar solo.

God is coming...

12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger.

If you remember back to the middle parts of Amos, when God comes back, it's not going to be fun and games. He's going to kill a lot of people.

17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

He's going to destroy a lot of things...

18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

But, I'm still going to praise Him, because that's what I have to do.

So the book of Habakkuk is about one man's quest to get to know God better.

He starts out questioning God, asking if God really knows what he's doing. But he accepts what God says he's going to do. He may not be completely happy about it, but he does love him some God, so he accepts it. God's inevitability makes Habakkuk realize that if he's going to worship God, he's going to have to do it happily whether he likes God's plan, or if he doesn't.

Do you love God and worship him whole heartedly even though you may not agree with his plan? Think about Job. Did you love your God and praise him when your grandmother died? Did you do the same when he took your child?

So what have we learned?

1. Habakkuk was an unknown. But he foresaw the coming Chaldean storm.

2. Habakkuk didn't agree with God, but he accepted God's plan. Do you accept God's plan?

3. God is in his holy temple, so you should shut up and quit doubting him.

Praise Jesus and shout Glory!

I'd like to add that project Habakkuk is progressing nicely, and the crisis has passed (at least for now).
