The Bible's overall message of love and tolerance?
I think you miss the point of the whole Bible. The Old Testament contains some histories, some prophesies, and an overall message that if you sin, and especially if you do not love, fear and worship the Lord, you will be punished but good. I see nothing in the Old Testament that we are supposed to "tolerate" one another.
The New Testament contains biographies of Jesus and letters inspired by God in which sin continues to be a major issue for God through his messenger Jesus. There is nothing about tolerating sin or even sinners.
And please don't quote to me "love your neighbor as yourself." YOU are NOT my neighbor.
As for rejecting this or that interpretation, please note that 2 Peter 1:20 clearly tells us not to be recasting the Bible in a light that contradicts its plain meaning.
