Default Day 298. Luke 4-6 - 07-17-2014, 05:16 PM

Luke 4-6

Not much new material here today, It's mostly stuff that's been covered in Matthew and Mark.

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

Devil says: turn rock into bread (nope); have these kingdoms (nope); jump off the roof (nope)... and that's it.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

They love Jesus everywhere!*

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

So, Jesus gets to read from Esaias. (Isaiah)

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Jesus was reading from Isaiah 61.

1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Granted, he left off the "day of vengeance" part.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

First, the people were probably confused because he only read the frist verse and part of the second. They were thinking, "well, that was short".

Then Jesus is like "Hey, mf'ers, I'm the thing that Isaiah was talking about!"

*22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

Remember, Jesus was loved everywhere... but in Nazareth he's just Joe the Carpenters Kid.

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

Then he tells about Elias (Elijah). During Elijah's time, there was a lot of famine, Elijah only helped one lady; there were lots of lepers, he only helped one person...

This sorta pissed off his neighbors.

28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

Jesus sorta walked on water, parted the crowd and went on his way.

So, he goes away to Capernaum, (after doing nothing for the people of Nazareth) and teaches them, casts out some devils, heals some people, and preaches everywhere.

Luke 5

Jesus is preaching, gets on a boat, then takes the guys out to fish.

4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

Jesus is better at fishing than gardening.

10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

It's raining men, hallelujah.

Jesus heals a leper.

Jesus heals the guy who was let down through the roof.

20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

That pissed off the pharisees and scribes.

21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

Jesus is like, it doesn't really matter what I say, the end result is gonna be the same.

23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

When he says it, it happens.

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

Publicans were tax collectors. They were looked on as crooked. Levi makes a feast, serving Jesus and other publicans.

30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Again, christianity isn't for everyone, it's only for people who need it.

The pharisees are like, John fasts and his followers fast all the time, why do you eat so much?

34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

Remember the whole "when the master is there " thing?

Luke 6

Disciples get yelled at for eating on the sabbath. Jesus tells the David shewbread story.

He then heals the guy with the withered hand on the Sabbath.

9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

He picks the 12.

13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

He goes out, and heals people, and preaches. Then gives a version of the beatitudes.

30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

Jesus says, if you give $20 to a friend, and never see them again, it ws money well spent.

32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

Also, nothing pisses off someone who is mad at you more, than by being sincerely nice to them.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

But, if you do judge, be right, and be fair. Because if you are not fair, it won't be fair to you.

41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Once you have your mote removed, and everything else, then you are free to go speck picking.

Basically Jesus says: If you have a person who's behavior offends you, like they are really loud at work, or swear a lot, or burp and fart alot, or talk on their phones all the time, or are just generally really loud, and offensive, and you can't stand them... before you go to ask them to change their behavior, you had better be sure that you don't have any things that you do that piss them off. Surely, we all do things that other people don't like, but before you go and tell someone else they are wrong, you better make sure you are right.

When I was in the army, anyone could make an "on the spot" correction for anyone else, it's a method of making sure that everyone is right. If you see someone who is wrong, you fix them. There's a thing called tact, and you definitely needed to use it if someone who outranked you had an issue, you just don't yell out at a Command Sergeant Major in front of everyone that his boots aren't shiny. No, you found a method to get him aside "hey sergeant major, can I talk to you about something" and he'd be like "sure Sgt. V, what can i do for you" and then you'd be like, "yes sgt major, i'm not sure if you stepped in a mud puddle on your way in today, but your boots sure look like they could use some polish". And he'd be like "thank you sgt. V, I'll get right on that". But, When you go up to him, and you are like "Hey, your boots look like crap" (and you don't have the kind of relationship where you can say those things) and your uniform looks like it was just pulled out of a duffel bag, and you didn't shave that morning" you can bet that he's gonna notice that... and that you'll get to do some extra police call that day.

So, what Jesus was saying was... If you are going to correct someone, be right yourself.

So, what have we learned today?

1. Very little new. But Jesus wasn't loved in his hometown.

2. If you are going to correct someone, be correct yourself.

3. Be nice to those that don't like you, it angers them.
