Default The Story of Easter - 03-14-2008, 03:51 PM

Dear Friends, I'm going to pull up one of my old sermons on Easter. I hate to resurrect an old thread around this time of year (as Jesus is the only thing that should be resurrected on Easter), but it's still as poignant today as it was back in 2005.

The story of Easter

Friends, it's that time of the year again, when we celebrate the RESURRECTION of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (Unlike the cathylicks we celebrate the resurrection instead of the crucifiction of HIM, but that's besides the point).

Friends, I'd like to retell the story so that you know all about the blessed events.

Everyone knows that shortly before he was crucified, that the disciples and Jesus had the last supper, then he was betrayed, I hope to retell this story and fill you in on ALL of the details of this time.

The story starts with Judas going and planning to betray Jesus. (sort of like in the Matrix except it REALLY happened)
Fyi
Matthew will be in Blue
Mark will be in RED
Luke will be in PURPLE
John will be in Green

Matthew 26: 14Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
16And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

Luke 22: 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

So Judas decides that he will betray Jesus for 30 pieces of Silver; Or Satan possessed Judas.

Later the disciples and Jesus have the last supper.

Matthew 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Mark 14:22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

The book of John does not contain a “Last Supper” style story, however, in John 6, verses 48-56 is a basic retelling of the eating of the flesh and drinking of the wine.
Instead, Jesus washed the disciples feet.

John 13:5: After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

After the meal, where Jesus said one of the disciples would betray him, Jesus and a few others decide that they should go for a walk in the park. This is in violation of Mosaic Law for the time of Passover.

Exodus 12:22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

There Jesus thinks maybe he doesn't want to die for mankind, but ultimately decides, it's probably for the best.

Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Then, Jesus tells Peter that he will deny him 3 times before the rooster crows (once or twice), Peter's like "me no..." of course we all know that he does.

Matthew 26:34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the rooster crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

Mark 14:30:And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the rooster crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Then, while they are out in the woods, Judas shows up with a group of people, and he kissed him, or went to kiss him, or Jesus just turned himself in.

Matthew 26:49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him.

Luke 22:47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

Then one of the disciples draws a sword and cuts off an ear.

Then all the disciples run away. Mark has a part of the story where somehow a young boy wound up naked.

Mark 14:51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

Then Jesus goes to Pilate, who asks if he is God.

Matthew 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

Here, Jesus could have saved his life by saying, NO, but he didn't even say YES, he said "Thou sayest!"

Then according to the Luke version (only in Luke, surprisingly absent from the other 3 accounts), Pilate sends Jesus to see Herod, who had Jurisdiction over Jesus.

Luke 22:7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Later, the Romans took Jesus clothes and ripped up his pants but saved the coat and cast Lots for the coat.

Then Jesus was crucified and Pilate put a sign over Jesus head that may have said one of four things.

Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Mark 15:26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

John 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

When he was hanging for the NINTH hour, Jesus thought he'd had enough and asked why his father had abandoned him.

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Mark 15:34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

While hanging on the cross, Jesus asked for some water, and the guards thought it'd be funny to give him vinegar instead.

Matthew 27:48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

After that, Jesus had enough and quit. Then he said his last words/cried out aloud.

Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Mark 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Then the Temple Veil ripped in half.
Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

The death of Jesus means an end to the powers and secrets of the old Jewish temple, but Luke and John for some reason don't mention it.

After that, the Matthew version says that dead corpses of saints left their graves and wandered around Jerusalem. This is surprisingly absent from the other three versions.

Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Then, Joseph takes Jesus corpse and puts it in his new tomb.

Matthew 27:60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

While there, Mary and another Mary, went to see the tomb (before the first of the week).

Matthew 27:61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Mark 15:47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

Then, PRAISE HIM, on the third day, first day of the week, he arose.

On that day, Mary Magdalene, and possibly others, or she went by herself, went to the grave to go put some spices on the stinking corpse of our LIVING God!

Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Luke 24:10 It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

There was a great earthquake, because an angel came down from heaven!

Matthew 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

But it was only mentioned in Matthew.

When the ladies got there, they went in, and saw an angel.

Mark 16:4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

Luke 24:3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

Then the ladies go back and tell the disciples that Jesus was gone. OR, they run into him and he tells them some things.

Luke 24:12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

John 20:5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

So, Peter went in, and picked up the clothes, or not.

OR, Jesus saw some of the women in the garden and they recognized him and worshipped him, or they just chatted with him like he was the gardener.

Matthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

John 20:14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

In Matthew, Jesus told them to tell the disciples to go to Galilee, but this isn't mentioned anywhere else, then, Jesus appears to the disciples in Galilee, or in Jerusalem, or someplace else.

Matthew 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Mark 16:13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.
14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

Luke 24:36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Then in Matthew, Jesus provides the Great Commission, which is closely followed in Mark but with the promise of damnation for unbelievers, and in Luke but it's pretty concise, John's version of it isn't so great.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

John 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Matthew's story ends there; Mark says then Jesus was lifted up to heaven; Luke says they went for a walk, then Jesus blessed the disciples and was lifted to heaven; John has a whole lot of story following that the others don't have.

John's story includes the doubting Thomas holes in the hand part and possibly Jesus did some other party tricks, but John doesn't tell us what he did.

John 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

John is not very specific about how Jesus left earth, and hints that jesus stayed around for a while doing all kinds of parlor tricks, including the cast the nets on the other side of the boats thing .

John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

And that's the story of EASTER, praise JESUS!!! You'll note there is no chocolate, no eggs and no unclean rabbits anywhere in the story.

Why are Matthew, Luke and John so strangely reticent on the subject of the naked kid?

I wonder if He gave up the Holy Ghost? Or would that be an unforgivable sin?

Maybe Mark was just worried that if he mentioned dead bodies coming to life AND a naked kid that no-one else said anything about, his testimony would start to seem implausible. Dunno why Luke and John are so quiet about it - maybe they either just didn't notice, or else thought it was such a mundane detail it wasn't worth mentioning.

But it was only mentioned in Matthew.
I have to say, between the resurrected corpses and the earthquake, Matthew does seem to have an eye for details that the other three overlook.

Hmmm. Good thing there's another three gospels, because trying to found a religion based on John's summaries of Jesus' teachings might prove a little tricky.

That John certainly is a tease. I wonder what other signs Jesus did that John just decided not to mention (but did mention the fact that he wasn't mentioning them)? I hope He fought a T-Rex.

I have to say, I am quite glad to know that I will never need to rely on John's testimony to prove my alibi in a court case. The fellow does seem a little unclear at times.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Praise Jesus! I thought we had another thread about this here as well, but Brother V's preaching is spot on as always.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.

Hi Texs,

Welcome to this forum. That is a really cute bunny you got there. What is it´s name and how are you going to cook it? Just to get you up to speed: This forum has some general rules you could adhere to, one of them is introducing yourself in this sub forum that is put there for exactly that purpose. This might win you some credits, instructions are in the description of said sub forum.

Anyway: Nice to meet you and have fun here.

Kind regards,

Roland

Jeremiah 6:21 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.

Best wishes for the people in Ukraine.

My dear, if you knew anything about the Bible you'd know that murder of innocent children is God's favorite pastime. Nothing to feel shocked about:

Psalm 137:9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

I quite like to think He enjoyed drowning those other ungrateful tots as well (Genesis 6:6).

What it looked like under Noah's Ark, probably.

Hello, my name is Mary. I hope to fellowship with you! That is, unless you don't listen to church authority (Deuteronomy 17:12); are a witch (Exodus 22:17); are a homosexual (Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:24-32); or fortuneteller (Leviticus 20:27) or a snotty kid who hits their dad (Exodus 21:15); or curses their parents (Proverbs 20:20; Leviticus 20:9); an adulterer (Leviticus 20:10); a non-Christian (Exodus 22:19; Deuteronomy 13:7-12; Deuteronomy 17:2-5;Romans 1:24-32); an atheist (2 Chronicles 15:12-13); or false prophet (Zechariah 13:3); from the town of one who worships another, false god (Deuteronomy 13:13-19); were a non-virgin bride (Deuteronomy 22:20-21); or blasphemer (Leviticus 24:10-16), as God calls for your execution and will no doubt send you to Hell, and I have no interest developing a friendship with the Spiritually Walking Dead.
