Basilissa, my dear sister, I'm a bit nervous too, but you are strong in your faith, and she can't shake that. After all, our faith is our rock in our lives; and rather, you can help her have the love of Jesus as her cornerstone. It is our job, after all, for better or for worse. "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15 I'd give her a short term, generous benefit of the doubt. She seems to be searching, and we are told in the Bible to be generous. "Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God." 2 Corinthians 9:11
Dolores, dear, I can see you are struggling. That much is clear. But look how happy I am! I am so over the moon and utterly in adoration of my Lord and King and He loves me. How do I know? I have a wonderful husband and father, food on the table, a roof over my head, a smart brain, a child on the way, and True Christian companionship. Look how many people have less than I, and the reason I have all that is through my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Lovingly yours in Christ,
Elizabeth

Miss delores, i would think a real anthropologist (do you apologize for being anthro btw? i always wondered) might rather go to Ferguson Mo to study the napa society there. youll have to google what NAPA means because we despise rassium here.

I've wondered since day one why you are relocating to the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Then I figured it out. The University of Iowa is now ranked the Number One Party School in the U. S.
Partaking in drunkenness, wild sex and Satanism will not help you finish your Ph. D. work.
I would suggest you affiliate with the Faith Bible and Theological Institute in Ankeny, just a few miles north of Freehold. It's much closer and is in the linage of the Moody Bible Institute. Working with the Baptists at Faith will give you a more Bible-based view of anthropology.
Just a suggestion.

I have a question. Mrs de Barriga, where will your husband (Joan, Jean - I forget his exact name) figure in all this? Will he remain in Chicago? I assume you have no children (and I know we Ladies of Landover have all been privately speculating about what Frankie the Wonder Pontiff would have to say about THAT!) but that aside, do you think it appropriate to be 4 or 5 hours away from your husband? I know my dear Matthew would never approve of such an arrangement.

As I said, I have 763 pages - well, actually, by now it's like 800+ pages - of fieldnotes just based on this forum. In the note in question, I have copied a prescription given out by Dr. Elmer White. I don't remember which thread it was in, but I have that written down in my notes. Somewhere. Gosh, I need to devise some kind of organization system in my notes!

Oh, you mean for stuff like putting a human as a display in the museum, or infecting natives with measles to see what happens, or the invention of scientific racism? Yeah, these are the dark pages in the history of anthropology, but then again, medicine, psychology, and several other sciences share the same dark pages with my discipline, so we are all in this together.

Thank you for your suggestion, Mr. JustGotSaved. However, that would mean that I would have to change my research question and build a new theoretical framework from scratch. I guess I find your community more interesting than the relationships between black residents and white police of Ferguson.

Thank you for your valuable suggestion. It is very unfortunate that this college does not offer a Ph.D. in Anthropology. I will try to take some of their courses, even though they will not count towards my degree requirements at Iowa.

Thank you for your concern, Mrs. Lytton-Vasey. Juan is looking for a job opening in Iowa as we speak, so hopefully we'll be able to move to Iowa together. Right now it seems like he might be hired in the Spanish-speaking Hope Clinic in Des Moines, so we are looking for a place to live maybe in Grinnell or Malcolm, which would be half way between Iowa City and Des Moines.

While I am a little appalled at the thought of a woman roaming the streets without her father or husband to accompany her, my reservations are appeased somewhat by knowing that she will be on the safest streets in the world. I only hope this doesn't set some sort of bad example for the woman-folk of our fine community. Heaven knows they are already prone to flights of fancy as their small, impressionable minds struggle with new ideas.
That said, my basement is strictly off limits, as is the last 6 rooms of the third floor of the south wing. Also keep in mind that my household staff is not representative of Freehold society, nor do the majority of them speak much English, and what little they do speak is in code. "chained and caged" for instance is code for laundry, as when they say it it comes out as an unintelligible "Raundlr".

I would suggest giving all the women a little spanking so that we don't get any ideas. My husband gives me one every time I post on this thread, in order to remember to not get any bad ideas.

Hmm, now I'm getting worried.
You passed up my suggestion about affiliating with the Baptist college right here in Ankeny near Freehold. But sin city, Grinnell, is OK? You did not know about the "Stonewall Center" on the campus of Grinnell College??
The city of Grinnell welcomes the homers we kick out of Freehold. I worry for your soul as you make this move.

I thank you for your concern, Mr. Mayor Hold. No, I was not aware that Grinnell was such an abominable place in the eyes of Landover Baptists. We have not decided where we are going to live in Iowa yet, but we will try to find a place which will not be offending to you or other members of your community. Ideally, that would mean moving to Freehold, would that be possible?

I wouldn't count on it dear; only True Christians live there, and neither of us are that godly yet. Someday, if we work hard, and are good wives, fruitful mother, and women of the Lord, perhaps. I am happy to get whatever the Lord via the good people of Landover see fit to give me.
Yours in Christ,
Elizabeth

I'm going to be frank, here. The problem would be with public records and receiving mail. We don't have any people in Freehold named Ortiz, Lopez or de Barriga. Our public employees would be at a loss to spell and pronounce your name.
I'd suggest downtown Des Moines. There are lots of Mexicans living there, Mexican restaurants and grocery stores. You would never be far from a source of beans.

Dolores, dear:
When we purchased a building in Des Moines for Naomi's Moist Pie, it came with an upstairs apartment that I would be more than willing to allow you to inhabit during your doctoral studies. It is a charming 2 bedroom, 1 bath, with a washer/dryer, central air, microwave, double door refrigerator, and a brand new range. The carpet is new, and it is walking distance to shopping, churches, the library (which should be nice for you) and a Hispanic Community Center. I would not expect you to pay rent, since I know if I am mentioned in your studies, you would only speak of me in the most impeccable way. (I am known in this community for being a valued part of the economy, a titanium tither at church, and a woman of character, as you may have been informed)
I am also willing to provide you with a scholarship since i know how expensive doctoral work can be. I make this offer because I feel so confident that any part of your study that mentions me will be completely free of scandal since the Lord has blessed me with purity and exceptional fashion sense.
Looking forward to your distinguished dissertation,
NRL

Dear Miss Lamb,
Thank you for your generous offer! Juan and me are very touched. Although I am expecting to be a teaching assistant at UI, and my husband has already been hired at the clinic I mentioned earlier, our budget is rather tight right now.
The general rule in anthropology is, that we do not mention the real names of our informants, but give them nicknames, to protect their privacy.
I would love for you to become my key informant. You seem to have many valuable contacts resulting in a detailed knowledge about what is going on in Freehold. When could we meet? I am really hoping that you could take me to Freehold! I've driven around it once, but I obviously was not able to get through the security.
Speaking of which. I know that according to the rules of cultural relativism I should not judge this community according to my standards and biases, but I do have a suggestion.
The barb wire and the guard towers are certainly impressive, but maybe the guards should be pointing their guns outside of the enclosure, not inside? In order to better express the idea that the barb wire and guards are there to prevent people from getting in - because right now it seems more like they are preventing people from getting out.
Just a friendly suggestion. I'm not saying that your way is wrong, just that it might be misunderstood by other people.

Quick update:
I'm in the process of moving from Illinois to Iowa, almost finished packing my and my husband's stuff in boxes. I will post more as soon as we are settled in our new place!
Merry Christmas, everybody!

Just a quick update - I want to apologize for visiting this lovely site so infrequently. I'm settling in, and at the same time writing some grant proposals, teaching undergraduate idiots students, etc, etc. I'm also going through the IRB/research on human subjects thing again, this time at the University of Iowa, and you know bureaucracy - it's going to take a long time. In the meantime, I'm creating contacts and key informants in and near Freehold.
Unfortunately, a lot of my preliminary data was lost when the U-Haul truck carrying most of my notebooks burnt down. It was just a freaky accident, and I mourn the lost of my data, especially of some very interesting stories involving Pastor Ezekiel. Well, I didn't collect too many stories, since the truck burnt down soon after Pastor Ezekiel learned that I was snooping around his past. What a freaky coincidence! I guess it was a sign from God not to snoop around Pastor Flint's past, or around his basement!

Hello again Dolores - it's so long since you updated us that I thought you must be stuck in a snowdrift or something.
Sorry to hear about the truck fire. I hope no True Christians™ were hurt? Anyway, I guess you were insured and at least you didn't lose anything of value. Notebooks are cheap.
Tell us, how are you settling in - is your accommodation all you expected?
With very best wishes, dear,
