History Channel: best channel ever, or greatest channel ever? -
02-14-2013, 02:37 PM
I've loved the History Channel ever since it was called Art & Entertainment.
From the silly but scientist-defying "Ancient Aliens" and "Nostradamus", to non-stop ice-road trucking' and pawn-starin' and best of all the ads - you won't believe how many one-of-a-kind never-to-be-seen-again specials the Franklin Mint has!
Another favourite was the one about inventions: it's how I learned that only the Greeks, then the Romans, then the Brits, and then us, are the only people to invent anything ever. Where would the Chinese be without us?
It's been a thrill watching the History Channel rise from it's humble beginnings. Starting with grainy, black and white footage from WW2 seemingly edited by a cuisinart....To, within two decades, the majesty of "World War Two in HD". I predict that by 2039 we'll be able to watch the 100th anniversary of WW2 in color, theatre quality, in the proper order, and with a period soundtrack - in short, it will look like like the newsreels seen by people who lived through it. Imagine!
Contrast with National Geographic Channel! For editors they must have hired MTV addicts, paid with speed pills for everyone they give an epileptic seizures to. What a lame organization the National Geographic Society is, I haven't heard of them discovering a mountain or anything for decades.
Meanwhile, as for the History Channel, I hear they're planning an expedition to Archive.org that will uncover an El Dorado of Hitler saluting, followed by an artillery gun shooting, followed by a bomber dropping bombs, followed by a map with arrows on it, followed by something burning, followed by an explosion (not of the burning object, of something else), followed by a fighter plane shooting a bomber (not the same bomber that just dropped the bombs - variety is important, after all), followed by an artillery gun shooting (same one as before? Who cares?) followed by a Bryce-3D™ computer animation that looks almost as good as the first Call of Duty game, followed by the map with NEW arrows, followed by another explosion....
Two thumbs up.

The History Channel is great, but it's kind of gone downhill in the past few years. I don't see anything historical about driving trucks on ice or people living in swamps.
I miss watching Modern Marvels and shows that are actually about history.

That reminds me, I'm pretty sure that I saw some commercials on the History Channel for a series about the Bible. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything about it recently. I'm looking forward to it, so I hope it wasn't cancelled.
