The ignorant Swede's version of Easter worshipping
Friends as we move closer to the solemn and reflective time that is Easter I thought it would be educational to share with you a different type of Easter. Namely the horrific and God-mocking one they celebrate in the heathen country of Sweden.
As you have no doubt heard, Sweden is a land of pagans and sinners. A land filled with people who have children without being married and drink even more than Russian politicians. They will of course tell you that they are the best country on earth because they don't have any crime or because they have a heavily flawed social welfare system that allows people to be lazy. These are the empty words of a country whose citizens are burdened with a false ego and lack even the remotest of ideas about who our Lord is.
I am grateful whenever my job takes me to a town or village in one of the many European countries that one could consider "nearly godless". Last year I found myself in a village in the north of Sweden around the time of Easter. Being a man of virtue, I inquired if the town had a church where I could worship during the holy days. "Of course my kompis", said a shopkeep, "the whole town will be celebrating Easter on Sunday". This of course took me by surprise, as I had observed on previous forays into the Sindavia - that only only about 23 Swedes actually attend church regularly. I went to bed that evening wondering just what he meant by "celebrating"...
When Sunday came I rose early and meandered to the ancient church in the village. It had apparently been built some 400 years ago - and rarely used since. I had expected a large gathering since the shopkeep had said the whole village would be there. Alas I was alone. In fact all of the Swedes were still sleeping off their Saturday night binge drinking session and I had the town to myself. Had I been lied to? Was this shopkeep having me on? I headed back to the village center where I could catch a bus to a town that had a church that was open on this holy of holy days.
As I approached the station I saw a sign on a community notice board regarding a large event to be held at the local school. The event was to be held on that day - Easter! So, they have different ways of celebrating Jesus here, but they do celebrate him! I had just a few hours to wait before the festivities began. Till then I returned to my hotel and spent my time in prayer.
When afternoon began to emerge so did the hungover Swedes. They looked a bit worse for wear, but you could tell that something was going on. Especially amongst the children. And it was then that I first noticed how their ignorant children were taught to "celebrate" Easter. They were dressed as witches! Some even had pointy black hats! Worst of all each carried a form of tea pot that they went around begging for money with. Not for their church, no, but for themselves.
I was accosted by a few of these small wretches as I tried to reach the school. Their parents had them dressed in rags and even help put on some form of makeup to increase their sinful appearance. (I should mention that even some of the boys were dressed up as witches - and female witches mind you, not warlocks.) The sadness I felt within for these backwards heathens was deep.
Unfortunately when I came to the school I found things to be even worse. A large fire had been constructed and the witch children and the adults were throwing all manner of things onto it. Some of the adult males were already beginning another day of vodka consumption - my "friend" the shopkeep being one. I went over to him and I said stiffly, "What is this? You said unto me that you would be celebrating Easter on this day! Why, this - this is the most horrific display of respect for Jesus that I have ever seen!. How can you even call yourself a Christian good sir?"
And here is where the sad tale ends. That man, that shopkeep, that so-called Christian, he turned to me and said (in an already half slurring manner), "I don't care about the meaning of Easter or Jesus. Nobody here does. This is a party. The kids get dressed up and make some money. We have a huge fire here to keep the evil spirits away when they return from fornicating with the devil. And everyone has a good time. What did you expect on Easter here in Sweden?"
As you can imagine I did not expect such a terribly undignified and just plain vile form of Easter observance - not even from the Swedes. Why not just come clean people of Sweden? Admit that you are still pagans and would rather keep your demon gods rather than truly embrace the Lord. You're so called Lutheran church is a farce. A sorrier lot one will never see, a people who are so ignorant that they believe that they have been saved when they have actually been condemned. I would ask you to pray for them, but I believe it to be too late.
