Do you remember the "BP Skid Control" schools they used to offer? (Wow, I'm dating myself here; I got into one of the last classes in my area in the late '70s, before I even had a license) Do you know why they disappeared? The insurance companies withdrew coverage.
They refused to insure a driving school that involved people intentionally sliding a car around AN EMPTY PARKING LOT, where there was NOTHING to hit.
If people learned how to control a skid, and recover from it, they'd get into less accidents. The insurance co.'s figured out that they made more money by jacking people's coverage up after they had an accident than they paid out repairing the damage from that accident, so from a profit point of view it was better for them for people to get into accidents.
These days, because of all the "safety features" (air bags, collapsible structures, etc., i.e. stuff that only works AFTER you're already in an accident [shouldn't safety be about avoiding the accident in the first place??!?]), cars are much more expensive to repair (and more likely to just be written off); between that and increased health care costs, those schools are coming back,
because the insurance companies will cover them again. Do your kids a favour and find them one when driver's license time comes.
