Night of the Living Dead - Matthew 27:50-54 -
11-23-2008, 01:05 AM
I see that someone has posted Matthew 27:46 as a favorite Bible verse, and, indeed, it carries a powerful message. However, if we read on a bit in Matthew 27, we see the full power of God revealed, for, at the moment Jesus perished on the cross, the dead were awakened and started walking through the streets of Jerusalem:
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
It is truly sad that, in their zeal to wipe out Christianity, the Jews and Romans collaborted to silence the eyewitnesses and bury the evidence of this remarkable event.

Ain't it the truth. In the next chapter Matthew even describes how the Jooish chief priests bribed the Romans with "large money" to lie about the resurrection.
Matthew 28:11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
Matthew 28:12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
Matthew 28:13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
Matthew 28:14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
Matthew28:15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
I presume the chief priests then went on to bribe the entire city. There would have been quite a number of pilgrims in Jerusalem during Easter, so it must have cost those hook-noses more than a few shiny pennies.
1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1st Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

I just find it weird that the people rising from the dead wasn't important enough to put into the other gospel's resurrection story.
Heck, the earthquake that caused them to get out and go for a stroll isn't mentioned anywhere else.

My theory is that Matthew was in the part of the city where the dead rose, etc. The other Apostles, they were in the parts of the city where that didn't happen, and they never felt the earthquake.
That's one of the questions I'm going to ask our Savior as soon as I get His ear up in Heaven. Amen.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:
Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

I'm afraid that theory won't quite cut the mustard, Pastor. Don't forget that John -- the disciple whom Jesus loved -- had a conversation with Jesus mere seconds before He gave up the ghost.
John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
John 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
John 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
My own theory is that John's eyes were so consumed with grief, that he didn't notice the 3 hours eclipse of the sun, the world-wide, rock-splitting earthquake, the temple veil being rent in twain and the army of zombies that invaded Jerusalem.
Psalm 31:9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

Another one on the long list. Fortunately we shall have plenty of time to get them all answered.
1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

Inspiration came to me when I was praying in my closet: Jesus told me the answer.
All books in the Bible are dictated by the Holy Ghost -- Matthew and John being mere meat puppets. Naturally the Holy Ghost didn't think it necessary to repeat the Zombie-story when it had already been covered meticulously by Matthew.
By the same token, you don't see any references in the epistles to Mary, Joseph, Bethlehem, the Wise Men from the East, Herod's infanticide, Jesus' being baptized, John the Baptist, the temptations in the desert, the Sermon on the Mount, The Lord's Prayer, Galilee, Nazareth, Jesus' transfiguration, Judas Iscariot, Mary Magdalena, Gethsemane, Calvary or any of Jesus' sayings and parables. These had already been covered in the Gospels.
If all 27 books of The New Testament repeated the Zombie-story, the Bible might become a tad boring and repetitive. That's why the Holy Ghost did some heavy editing. They don't call the Bible "The Good Book" for nothing.

Jews giving up money? Now that is a miracle.

Of course! That has to be the answer. Surely God would not waste space in the Bible by telling the same story over and over! Thank you, Pastor Danish, you have opened my eyes.

You have never even seen it, much less seen a Bible.
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.
