Default Day 113. 1 Chronicles 10-12 - 01-25-2008, 06:30 PM

1 Chronicles 10-12

Today we get retellings of:
  • Death of Saul
  • David and his boys
  • David's army

1 Chronicles 10

1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

In the nice layout of the book of 1 Chronicles, the author (chronicler) goes directly from genealogies into the story of Saul's death.

2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

Remember, Saul was told that he and his sons would die the same day by the zombie/ghost of Samuel who was brought back by the witch of Endor.

4 Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

His armourbearer then fell on his sword too.

The Philistines then stripped Saul of his armour, cut off his head and displayed the head in the temple of Dagon.

12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Saul's corpse and head and stuff was taken back and buried in Jabesh.

13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

Remember, Saul's great transgression was that he didn't kill Agag and all the Amalikites.

Now, in verse 14, it says that Saul didn't inquire of the LORD, but the reason that Saul went to the witch of Endor, was because God wasn't answering him.

1 Samuel 28:6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

1 Chronicles 11

1 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

It wasn't ALL Israel at first, remember the tribe of Benjamin really wanted to install Ishbosheth (Saul's surviving son) as king, and he was crowned and reigned for 2 years.

2 And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.

Leddest out and broughtest in, means the person who was the leader at war. David may not have been the top general under Saul (that was Abner) but still, more people chose to go to war (happily) because of David, than because of Abner.

9 So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.

God was always with Saul too, whether he was a comforting spirit, or if he was the Evil Spirit. When it says the LORD of hosts was with David, that means He was there providing counsel, direction and comfort; not like how He troubled Saul.

10 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

David's mighty 3!

Jashobeam
Eleazar
Shammah

11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.

12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.

A narrative on Shammah isn't in 1 Chronicles 11.

15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

Remember when David was in the cave, and really wanted a drink of water from the well, then the three (not THE three) went and got it, and then David poured it out. That's retold here.
20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.

Abishai was the leader of the water getters.

21 Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.

He was part of the water 3, and was their leader, however he wasn't part of THE 3, of Jashobeam, Eleazar and Shammah.

24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties.

25 Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.

Benaiah kicked ass, not as good as THE 3, but THE 3 knew who he was and they probably had a kick ass nickname for him, like Benaiah the destroyer or something cool like that.

41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai,

I still find it amazing that David impregnated the wife of Uriah the Hittite, even though Uriah was one of his 30 (and possibly 7) best army buds.

1 Chronicles 12

1 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.

David and his men were similar to Robin Hood and his merry men; like William Wallace; like King Arthur. Each had a little army of great fighters; but each also had a smaller group of people who were closer to him and had a more central part in the narrative.

2 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin.

My gosh, almost exactly like Robin Hood. Robin Hood was against the sheriff, and David was against (kind of) Saul.

19 And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.

Remember the time when David was seeking refuge from Saul in the land of the Philistines and he was gonna go out and kill Philistines from behind their lines, but the generals sent David back to his exile home. (Then when he got back the Amalekites had raided the place and stole his 2 wives.)

21 And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.

38 All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

After the 2 year rule of Ishbosheth, they were all one heart.

So what have we learned today?

1. Try though you might, you probably won't get into THE 3; you may kill 800 Philistines singlehandedly but so long as THE 3 are still around, you ain't gonna do it.
2. Saul may or may not have enquired of the LORD.
3. If David would have drank the water, Benaiah would probably have made THE 3, and it'd be renamed THE 4.

Blessed to be a Blessing
V

Judges 9:21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
