Default Day 104. 2 Kings 4-6 - 01-09-2008, 07:25 PM

2 Kings 4-6

Today we get

Elisha and the oily miracle
Elisha and the dead boy
Elisha and Naaman
The siege of Samaria

2 Kings 4

There was this woman, who's husband had died. That man owed a LOT of money. So when the debtors came to collect that money, the lady didn't have any, she only had a pot of oil. So they were going to take her two boys. She went to Elisha to beg for a miracle.

3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

Elisha tells her to borrow as many pots, buckets, pans, barrels... from her neighbours as possible.

4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

Pour the oil into one, then into the next, and so on, until they are all full. Similar to the Loaves and Fishes miracle of Jesus, similar to the meal and oil miracle of Elijah back in 1 Kings 17:16.

7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

Just like today, oil is the key to money in the middle east.

8And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

Every time he would pass Shunem, he'd stay at the same ladies place.

She decides that she should make a prophets chamber in her house, with a bed, candle, a table, and a stool.

One day he shows up and goes to rest in his room.

12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

Elisha finds out from Gehazi that she doesn't have any children (she was old; as was her husband) so Elisha says she will have a child.

16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

She thought he was just humouring her.

But then she conceived and had a son. Later in the boys life he went out to work with his father, and he had a bad headache, and died.

21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

Dead boy on prophets bed... sound familiar?

So she gets permission from her husband to go to Carmel to find Elisha, goes there and tells him that her son is dead. She asks, why was she given a child just to have it taken away?

Elisha sends his ever faithful servant Gehazi to go put his staff on the boys head. He does, and nothing happens.

33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD.

34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Elisha, like Elijah, raised a boy from the dead by laying on him. (1 Kings 17:21)

Elisha went to Gilgal and there was a bad harvest season. One of the servants goes out to get some food to make pottage, he comes back with some wild gourds (that were poisonous; but they didn't realize it at the time).

40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

Read that all you hippies! There is DEATH IN THE POT!

Elisha has them put some meal in the pot, and that made it all better.

2 Kings 5

1 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.

Can a leper really be a great man? That'd be like saying that a man with the AIDS could be great, and that just doesn't happen.

Well, the Syrians captured an Israel woman and she tells them that Elisha is a prophet of the REAL God, and he could probably cure Naaman.

5 And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

Silver, gold, and clothes. Clothes at the time must have been very hard to come by and very expensive. Remember, Samson killed a bunch of guys for some clothes for his groomsmen.

7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.

The king of Israel thought the king of Syria wanted HIM to cure Naaman, but didn't think about Elisha. Elisha hears of the kings predicament, and tells the king to send Naaman to him.

Naaman arrives at Elisha's and Elisha tells him to wash 7 times in the Jordan. Naaman is outraged, he wanted instant healing.

11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

One of Naaman's servants talks some sense into him. He says, something like; Boss, if he told you to do something really really hard, like climb mount everest, you would have done it, but instead he just said "go wash in jordan" so why not just try it?

14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

So Naaman was pure again.

Naaman goes back to Elisha and offers him a gift; which Elisha refuses (I'd like to see Benny Hinn refuse a gift after he "heals" someone.)

Naaman then offers Elisha some help for his servants (Gehazi). Which Elisha also refuses.

18 In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing.

Naaman knows when he gets back to Syria that he's going to have to go into Rimmon's temple. But he only wants to worship the REAL God. So he asks for forgiveness for sins that he is going to commit. See friends, going into another church is a sin! Be it Lutheran, Catholic, Apostolic Christian, Methodist, or any form of Mormon temple, jooish SINogogue, mudslim whateverthehell they are called; going into a place of worship of anything other than the REAL GOD (Landover Baptist) is a SIN!

20But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.

Gehazi saw that stuff was offered to him, which was refused by Elisha (like when the first Bush refused payment to the American troops from the Kuwaitis after Desert Storm 1; but himself made vast fortunes off them).

Gehazi catches up to Naaman.

22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.

Naaman gives him 2 talents of silver (remember a talent is a the weight of a body).

Gehazi goes back to Elisha, and Elisha asks where he went; Gehazi says nowhere; but Elisha knew.

27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

2 Kings 6

Elisha and the boys decide they need to move, so they go find a spot by Jordan. While building a house, one of the axe heads flies off into the river.

6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

Syria attacked Israel. The prophet tells the king of Israel where he can hide. The king of Syria wants to get the prophet, and finds out he is in Dothan. So he takes his army there.

One of the prophets servants goes out and sees all the enemy and goes in and tells the prophet.

16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

The people saw the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire, then Elisha prayed that their eyes would be blinded. After that happened, he led the blind people to the king of Israel.

21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?

Elisha says no, they are captives, so make them a feast.

Afterwards they sent them away. So because of that the marauding Syrians didn't go back into Israel.

24 And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

They did a real good job of the siege too.

25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.

80 pieces of silver for an ass's head. I'd assume that's probably an all time high for that. Oil just recently went over $100 a barrel, but 80 pieces of silver for an ass's head has got to be an all time high. I have no idea how much that'd be worth now, if adjusted for inflation.

These people were starving. So much so that their diet consisted of whatever they could find. Imagine having to eat the head of a donkey, if you couldn't afford that, you resorted to buying dove shit! If you couldn't afford that...

26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.

The king's like "what?"

28 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.

29 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

The lady was still hungry after eating her son, so she demanded that the other lady make boy soup too, but she didn't.

Mind you; this lady wasn't confessing to murdering her son for food. She wasn't confessing to cannibalism. This lady wanted justice! She wanted another meal! She wanted the other lady to give up her son too! She was so hungry, that eating her children became the ONLY logical choice.

30 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

The king plans on killing Elisha.

31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.

Meanwhile; Elisha was sitting around with the elders, and told them that the king was going to send someone to kill him.

33 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?

So what have we learned today?

1. Elijah and Elisha both did a food miracle. (So did Jesus)
2. Elijah and Elisha both did a raising a dead boy miracle. (So did Jesus)
3. If you are hungry enough, you'll eat the heads of animals; the poop of birds; and your children.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

As long as they didn't boil the kid in his mother's milk, that might be OK Biblically.

Sorry, just a little Bible joke. Please don't try this at home.

Church fundraising idea: would it be possible to find some way to sell dove dung to negroes?

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.
