Thumbs up Condemn Tim LeHay's Stand on Abortion? - 01-04-2011, 07:56 PM

Dearest Brothers in Christ;

I am writing to you now to discuss a matter that was tucked in the back corners of my dusty mind for many, many years.

Those who have known me since I came into fellowship here at LBC will recall my back story. I had become a Born-Again Christian at 17 and tried to live my life by Biblical practice as it was explained to me by different spiritual leaders at that time. I began to question certain elements of Biblical teaching in my early 30's and fell away from the Lord before returning to Him in True Earnest after I had gained weight in my early 50's and no longer was able to attract any other form of male attention whatsoever.

Now during those earlier years, I came across a book written by Tim LeHay. The subject of the book was sex and marriage as to be conducted by God's Law. Since Mr. LeHay had also written another excellent book decrying homosexuality, "The Unhappy Gays", I naturally believed that he was inspired with True Wisdom from Almighty God.

In the book, such subjects as birth control and abortion were discussed. It has been many years since I have laid eyes on its pages, but I remember one chapter that dealt with the issue of a young girl who had been attacked on her way home from Bible Study one evening.

Again, it has been decades since I read the book, but I distinctly remember Mr. LeHay describing how a man lept from the bushes and then raped this very young woman, with the result being that she fell pregnant from the assault.

He then discusses the subject thus, " after careful investigation, it was determined that the young woman did not know her attacker. . ." Now, I am paraphrasing here due to not having the book to hand to quote from directly, but there were some other words written before the conclusion was arrived upon, by the elders of the young woman's church, that God would not want the young woman -- a girl, really, if I recall--to have to suffer any further by having to carry through with this clearly unwanted pregnancy. They counselled and supported her in having an abortion.

Brothers, it has taken me decades to bring my thoughts and feelings to bear on this matter. Surely the male church elders were correct in looking into the incident itself carefully. The girl's word would not have been sufficient by any means. Their determination that the girl had had no earlier acquaintance with the rapist was certainly a very important fact that needed to be verified. If there was even the slightest suggestion that she had met the man, and encouraged him in any way, that would have had significant bearing on the elders' judgment.

Furthermore, it does not trouble me in the least that the church elders were the ones to undertake the issue of the young girl's fate vis-a-vis the pregnancy. The Good Lord forbid that the decision be placed in her hands. This was a human life with an eternal soul to be considered, not some personal matter involving an innocent girl's body and mental health.

What troubles me now that I have become a True Christian is this: Were any sincere efforts to apprehend this man made? If he could have been located, would the elders have followed God's Word, as He intended, and brokered a marriage arrangement as God instructed us in Holy Scripture?

Sadly, the information is not provided in Mr. LeHay's account. But what is clearly indicated is that these men in the girl's church took it upon themselves to provide dispensation on the unborn child in the girl's womb.

They decided that she was worthy of a legal and safe abortion and supported her in this murderous deed.

If they had truly been Bible Believers and obedient to God's Holy Command they would have stopped to consider that it was GOD'S choice to allow the young woman's egg to be released at the exact moment needed to ensure fertilization by the rapist' seed. The attacker had free will and God did nothing to thwart the man in his sinful actions, naturally. God allows sin to continue in this world for His Own purpose and it is not our place to criticize, or even question.

But if an Almighty and Omnipotent God decided to allow His young believer's virginity to be taken in violent manner by a stranger--and after she had been sanctified by an evening of prayer and Bible study, no less-- than surely if He, Himself had wanted to "spare" the girl the additional sorrow of an unwanted pregnancy than He, Himself would have shut off her womb on that occasion.

He, Himself, did not choose to do so. But rather He led the sperm to their very target and allowed a human soul to be conceived that night.

For those church elders to have done anything other than pray for a possible miscarriage, humbling themselves before God and asking for such an event only if it were His Will, was a grave sin.

They were so close to being True Bible Believers. They took the matter into their own hands as far as God did direct them to do so. They made certain that the young girl did not know her attacker from Adam, so as to determine whether or not to level the charge of fornication upon her. They took unto themselves the decision of what would happen to the young woman rather than leaving it in her hands, knowing that as men it was given to them to exercise authority over females, but then they blasphemed to a very real degree.

They decided that God's allowance of a pregnancy for the girl was NOT in her best interests. They questioned God's Will and Wisdom and decided for THEMSELVES that an abortion to kill the innocent child was "right".

Brothers, it has been many years since I read that book, but the actions of those church elders, those so-called men of God have weighted on me. Now, you know the sort of hypocrisy that provoked my distance from God in my younger years. Thank you for allowing me to express my outrage here in this forum.

Gratefully Yours,

Handmaiden
