While we are called to be simple-minded when it comes to our faith (Matthew 18:3), nevertheless we are called to be aware that behind every corner could lurk a threat to that faith (1 Peter 5:8). While some may suggest this makes for a bad combination of gullibility and paranoia, I prefer to think of it as being good stewards of our minds, or a kind of internal NSA/KGB of our own thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5). As parents, we are called to be good stewards of our children's minds, even if it hurts them (Proverbs 19:18; Proverbs 23:13).
I find it easier to simply allow those books and movies I recognize. This isn't so hard since I stopped watching new movies and tv shows some 15 years ago, and haven't had time to read new books for at least a decade before that. This makes the inventory in my memory blessedly short and easy to recall when necessary. Any book or video that doesn't spark my memory is quickly and unceremoniously plopped into a black garbage back and whisked away to the trash cans.
Let's see, that leaves the Holy Bible, a few Bible Concordances, the Left Behind series, the 700 Club, and not much more. I don't take chances with my children's eternal well-being. When they whine and fuss over losing items they considered precious, say a birthday present or gift from a friend now long gone, I remind them in Heaven they'll not want for all the stupid trinkets they think are important now, how very un-Christ-like and spiritually ugly their selfishness is. Generally, after sound discipline, a week of significant additional chores sets their attitudes back in good order.
