I'm sure your "atheist buddy" has problems understanding that a vow is vow (I'm only guessing here, of course, since I don't have any "atheist buddies" myself). You don't go back on your promise to God, that's how simple it is:
Judges 11:35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
The rules are explained in Leviticus 27:
Leviticus 27:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Leviticus 27:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation.
You can read the chapter yourself and go through the price list, but the pertinent verse is this one:
Leviticus 27:29 None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death.

Punished? What for? For keeping his promise to God?

As my True Christian™ brothers have explained to you, you're refering to Jephthah from Judges 11. I know your "atheist buddy" will spew out some mind-rotting pablum, like "sure, but that was the Old Testament". Well, let's look at the New Testament instead, and see what Jesus says, shall we?
Hebrews 11:32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Hebrews 11:33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
Hebrews 11:34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
That's what True Christianity® is all about: Faith, righteousness and promise keeping. Tell that to your "atheist buddy".

Holbein

1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1st Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

It is difficult to believe that God helped him, maybe Satan, because it is well-known that killing is prohibited in the Holy Bible.

Exodus 20:13, KJV, Thou shalt not kill.

Not so much 'god' who likes sacrifices, more the benighted & bloodthirsty blokes who wrote this. Very keen on sacrifice & blind obedience, that lot.

We need to let Scripture interpret Scripture. God gave that commandment, but He also commanded killing, e.g., in the holy genocides and the holy capital punishment. More is explained in this sermon.

This church is dedicated to preaching True Christianity™ and the King James Bible exactly as they are, with no alterations to make them more politically correct for modern liberals. If you think that we've misquoted or twisted Scripture or quoted any verse out of context, please explain in detail how we've done so. Otherwise, if what you read on this site offends you, then you're offended by Almighty God and His Word, not by us.

Thank you Prune for clearing that up for anyone concerned about that situation. I agree, the scripture says that Jepthah was a righteous man, and he fulfilled his vow unto the Lord. Praise Jesus!
Jepthah is a shinin' example of how True-Christians are to fulfill their promises to God no matter what the demon hordes of hell say through the mouths of atheists!

Psalm
50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

Remember, the Lord delights in fleshly sacrifices!

Deuteronomy
12:27 And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh.

C:Bible Truth.jpg

Psalm 50:22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
Deuteronomy32:35 To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
Jerimiah 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
Numbers 32:23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
Leviticus24:14 Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.
Ephesians5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 5:7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

And don't be fooled by all the liberal NIV-reading false Christians who try and twist the plain meaning of these words. Many of them try to argue that he never killed his daughter at all. i am serious. They focus on the following:

Quote:
38: And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39: And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
These LIEberal Christians argue, "She just returned after being banished for two months. THAT was him fulfilling his vow. It even says that she "knew no man." Why would it say that if he HADN'T let her live? We were already told she went to the caves in the mountains as a virgin. If he killed her when she came back, she would still be a virgin so there would be no need to repeat that which the Bible JUST told us. So God is telling us that she stayed virgin for the rest of her life!!!"

They even argue that the spinsterhood of the daughter to old age was the "custom in Isreal" that the Bible speaks of! I am NOT making this up. They really do rationalize their weak-willed pinko feelings this way. I am suprised they don't end their reasoning with "Yeah...that's the ticket!" Read the words of God. Don't think about them. Don't try to twist them into some weird shape to fit your own morals.

It is this simple: As soon as you start thinking about whether or not God (or a man acting with the blessings of God) did a good or bad thing, you are letting morals that you learned from somewhere OUTSIDE the Bible to change your reading of the morals INSIDE the Bible. That is NOT how to be a True Christian!
