Default Day 30. Leviticus 1-3 - 10-04-2007, 04:04 PM

Leviticus 1-3

Leviticus, ah, Leviticus.

The LAW!

613 of them, the Mitzvot. While some of the laws are in Genesis, Deuteronomy, Exodus, and Numbers, the book with the most, it seems is Leviticus (About 245 of them).

The book of Leviticus was dictated by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. It along with Genesis, Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy make up the Torah (the books of Moses)

Today we get:
  • Burnt offerings
  • Meat (not meat) offerings
  • Peace offerings

Leviticus 1

1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

See, it was dictated by God, it says so right there in verse 1.

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

The first part of Chapter 1 is offerings of cattle, sheep and goats.

3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

A man is to bring a male without blemish to the tabernacle to be sacrificed. Whenever I read about sacrifice, I think about Jesus and the money changers. Lets look forward a little bit. Why was Jesus pissed off at the temple?

John 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

Why were people selling oxen and sheep and doves in the temple anyway? The Hebrew society had changed from being pure shepherds to being city dwellers, there was still sacrificial requirements for salvation at the time. As the people didn't have their own cattle, doves, sheep; they had to get them from somewhere. That is where the money changers came in. People would go to the temple with money, purchase an animal for sacrifice, and then it would be offered to the LORD.

It's not that there was an open market going on in the courtyard, all the animals there were going to be sacrificed.

So why was Jesus mad?

Because the sacrifice wasn't REAL. It was easy, you go to temple, buy an animal, and then hand it over. Originally the sacrifice was a male without blemish, the best one. Now, you just go buy whatever you feel like and then you get to go home and say, "well I did what I was supposed to". The law at that point, was just vain repetition, it wasn't personal. That's what angered Jesus.

Ok, back to Leviticus.

After the person brings the animal to Aaron and his sons, they kill it, sprinkle blood around the altar, cut it up, and then burn it.

8 And the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

The innards and legs would be washed before being put on the fire, (legs would be washed because as it was killed the animal may lose control of it's bowels, and you don't put poop on God's altar (made of brass)).

10 And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

Sacrifice the male without blemish (Isaac? Jesus?)

Kill it on the side, sprinkle the blood, cut it up, clean the innards, burn it.

14 And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

The priest wrings off the head, throws that on the fire, wrings out the blood, plucks the feathers, then cleave the wings, and throw it on the fire.

Leviticus 2

1 And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:

Meat offerings are also known as Grain offerings, gift offerings, or meal offerings.

The first of the meat offering is the flour offering. A person would bring in flour, offer it to the priests, who would burn a handful, and keep the rest.

The second offering is unleavened baked cakes.

The third is unleavened pan baked cakes.

The fourth is unleavened pan-fried cakes.

The people would bring in ten cakes, the priests would burn at least one, and eat the rest, in the tentbernacle.

11 No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire.

Remember God hates leaven, because it is a state of decay, pre-eaten by yeast or bacteria. Honey can't be part of the sacrifice because it is a byproduct of bees.

13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

Think of the unleavened bread like saltine crackers, except, not really because those have air bubbles.

Leviticus 3

1 And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD.

The priest kills it the same way, dresses it the same way, and burns it the same way.

Whether it be cattle, sheep, or goats, it is done in the same way as the offering in Leviticus 1.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

So what have we learned today:

1. God loves the smell of a good barbecue.
2. The priests had to be butchers.
3. Meat means bread.

PRAISE JESUS!!!
