Fabric Question -
01-28-2014, 03:10 PM
Hi Ladies!
I've noticed that some of my nightgowns have started to get old and ratty-looking, so I'm planning on making some new ones soon. I'm going to be making them long and modest, but I'm a little unsure about the type of fabric to use. I'm obviously not going to mix the fabric, but I want them to be warm and comfortable.
What kind of fabric do you think would be the best for me to use?
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Hello Sister Esther,
I don't know what the U.S. name for this fabric is, but I always make my nightdresses out of winceyette, which is a cozy type of pure, brushed cotton flannelette. It comes in charming, feminine, floral patterns, ideal for making up into modest garments.
If you search for images of "winceyette nighties" you will find many pretty examples like this one.
Good luck, and happy sewing, Sister!

Thank you for the suggestion! I looked it up online and it sounds quite comfortable. I'm not sure if any of the local fabric stores have any, but i'll definitely check.

You should be able to find flannelette easily online. This fabric also makes comfortable, light sweaters for summer and father likes the boxers I made for him using a very masculine, tasteful print. I've made baby blankets as gifts using flannelette, particularly in warmer months.
Pastor says that women should only sleep in clothes of pure cotton. He claims no biblical evidence of this. When Father was punishing Mother, she slept in burlap.

Oh my, flannelette looks lovely! I'll consider using that if I can find some that's affordable!
Thank you!

WARNING
France
Recently I received some winceyette fabric samples from France, nice and lively with bright stripes suitable for night attire, I had thought. Winceyette has a raised nap on both sides and is very comfortable. But included with the material was a sewing pattern. Now running up your own pattern on the machine is quite safe as we all know, however be alert: the French are demon possessed when it comes to "fashion" and it would be a disaster for anyone to make garments cut like this one. Here is tha fabric sample, as you can see it's quite appealing and 100% cotton.
I was soon to be utterly revolted. Fortunately I don't normally work from patterns preferring to use a tape measure and adjust the cut according to individual request since very few people are proportioned according to the fashion designer's rather distorted ideas of how we should look. French designers in particular. As these new, vibrant fabrics are sent out I must caution the budding seamstress from just following the included pattern, quite seriously if you wear this stuff you'll be out hunting snails before you can say Jack Robinson.
WHO DO THEY THINK THEY'RE KIDDING?
Look at the footwear, is she really going to bed dressed like that? Of course not! And I noticed that the pigments they've developed fluoresce under a variety of street lighting to my utter disgust, which is why I'm warning anyone considering winceyette to be very wary of the latest French fabrics and especially the patterns so sneakily included. No Christian would ever wear such garments and my recommendation is to just burn them unopened. The actual fabric however should be suitable for your usual pattern. Sewing is a great way to save money for tithing and of course everything always fits so much better.
I hope my warning is not too late.

I usually don't intervene on ladies threads, but there is a threat that will likely escape TC ladies nowadays.
In the good old days GOD's given cotton was harvested by nigahs that now just wait for hand-overs.
Nowadays most cotton comes from heathen Hindooos who use poisonous cotton (more than 90% of cotton produced in india is GMO)
Not only is it poisonous, it is GMO, cotton mixed with bacteria.
This is clearly the most vicious mixture and an insult to at least two of GOD's commandments (no mixed fabrics and no kind breading with other kind)
Consider abstaining from cotton unless you can trace WITHOUT DOUBT the origin to GOD GIVEN COTTON.

Thank you for making that point. I can confirm that the Indian cotton mills have employed consultants to ensure that their cotton is of the lowest quality they can get away with. They no longer have the necessary machinery to produce a grade of cotton demanded by French fashion houses. Australian cotton is high quality and is supplied to France for spinning and weaving and although we are not their only source they do insist on the highest grade from any supplier.
I occasionally spin my own cotton but generally stick with wool and will also mention that thick boiled silk yarns are being combined with coarse handspun (usually dark coloured) wool and flax in direct contravention of God's Just Law as a premium yarn for either weaving or knitting. Satan majors in such cunning stunts to get more souls for torturing later so be vigilant even at hand crafted fairs abominations are everywhere. There is some good quality fabric available from Holland and Ireland too, and I have some lovely Swedish cotton damask which is worth seeking out to avoid becoming an abomination in the Eyes of God.
Just think where you'd be heading right now if He had not informed us of the risks in haberdashery.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but ...
"Almost 100% of Australia’s cotton crop is grown with transgenic varieties."
http://cottonaustralia.com.au/cotton...-biotechnology
Satan inspired, abominable different kind bestiality spawned, poisonous cotton. All of it.
Be sure not to use cotton down under. Plenty of sheep in NZ, go for wool.

That's not the high quality stuff though, and they are recently imported varieties from about 10 years ago.
Yes, virtually everything I spin is wool and I have a nice merino cross fleece here to do next week. A lot of the low-end cotton is sent to India and I do tend to overlook that stuff. Thank you for reminding me.
The earliest crops were harvested during the 1790's and those strains have acclimatised well. They have continued to be grown and are either hand spun or exported in small batches.
However neither Australian nor French garments are very modest and should be avoided, especially by the younger contributors here.

New Zealand wool? Why would you bother? They stole their sheep from Australia, and sodomise them. Australia produces beautiful wool from Australian sheep that are not sodomised.

The majority of Australian wool is for spinning worsted yarns. There is a considerable underproduction of wool for carpet. New Zealand produces more of that and perhaps you've hit upon the reason why. Thanks for the suggestion - although there are plenty of weirdos hanging around here too, but less percentage-wise than in Wales. Do you think Welsh cloth would be suitable for nightgowns?

Thank you for the advice! Thankfully, I haven't bought any fabric yet because I was trying to find some that was affordable. I will admit that I was a little worried about the purity of certain kinds of fabric, so it was very nice to get some feedback on how different kinds are made.
I will definitely look for cotton from the places that Mitza suggested.
Thanks again for the advice! I greatly appreciate it!

All you really need is organic cotton from empty flour sacks.
It can be pieced together as needed.
Perhaps burlap for your unclean times, as a reminder of your imperfection.

I see that there is some "agreement" about using burlap for punishment or during the unclean times. I find that suggestion to be an appealing one and an appropriate reminder of my status as a woman, but I do have one question, though. I know that burlap is used for sacks, so is it the same as, or at least similar to, sackcloth? I don't want to accidentally get the two of them confused if they are indeed different.

I asked my husband and he said that sackcloth and burlap are the same.
For one thing, you'll find neither in one of those ridiculous fabric stores run by unGodly men and even women.

So this is your standard burlap dress:
But, you can make it more attractive if you're handy with the sewing machine (and which good Godly woman isn't?):
For instance, imagine this skirt, but quite a bit longer:
teamed with a tunic top or something like this (without the hood):
A burlap dress (add sleeves of course). Note how the top on the first one is cut on the bias, which makes it better fitting and far more interesting
I have rolls of burlap in my menstral shack. And I experiment with new designs to make later in cottons and wools. If it works with burlap, you know it's going to work with other fabrics.

Those are lovely fabrics, however I must mention that if sewing on a machine the tension is difficult to regulate using jute thread and the heathen retailer will try to foist cotton or even polyester thread onto you. Another point worth raising is that sackcloth made from hemp is becoming popular, especially from France. However hemp fibre is quite coarse and most woven fabric is a hemp/cotton blebd, or hemp and flax mixed 55% hemp, which directly flouts God's Just Law and mocks His plan for Salvation.
Such garments are therefore an abomination in His sight and abominations merit the harsher penalties. Not quite at the genocide-plus-all-livestock level, but quite severe personallly. That's how much God loves us. He's warned us, but the fabric dealers won't care that their yarns lead to perdition, so it's always worth checking first.

Sisters,
Doesn't this just show the immensity of God's love for us? Think: Without His Holy Word, how else would we know that the mixing of fabrics is so offensive to our LORD? I pity so many in the world that ignore this fundamental truth and pray God's mercies upon them. If more women looked for Godly husbands, men that will teach their wives about the Word of God, I believe we'd have less uppity wives trying to dominate the world. I've added this to my prayer list.
Oh, what a God we serve. Hallelujah!
