Would you like to share a few thoughts with us on what this verse means to you, friend?
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

What horrible version of the bible did you copy that from? The NIV???
That verse just goes to show that the NIV is full of contradictions.
In it, you see the words "one and only Son"; which, if you read the bible; you find to be incorrect.
If you read Luke, in the genealogies, you find the last person listed is Adam. Now, what does Luke have to say about Adam?
Luke 3:38 the son of Kenan, 38the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
Luke 3:38 says Adam is the son of God. But then, John 3:16 says "one and only Son". That there is a contradiction. That there proves that the NIV cannot be trusted.
Friend, you should only read from the KJV1611.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Hmmmm .... I hope you don't mind me for asking, Unfalsifiable, but having read your other posts, I sense your identification with Nicodemus, the tortured Pharisee who -- in the opening verses of John 3 we learn -- hide under the darkness of night, in order to visit with Jesus. Such was Nicodemus' shame in seeking out the Son of God. Do you, too, Unfalsifiable, feel a deep internal conflict that prevents you from fully trusting in our Lord? I suspect you do, and I want you to know that despite your inchoate hate for Godly service, we -- here at Landover -- are ever ready to minister to the black side of your rebellious heart. All you need to do is ask.

The NIV explains in a footnote the whole "begotten" business. I know Hebrew, and the NIV does it better then the KJV1611.
Moses with horns anyone? That is not to take away from the heroics of the people who compiled the KJV, but I think it is time to thank them and move on.
And Larry, I really do not understand what you're saying. John 3:16 is just my favourite part of the Bible.

Great, you know Hebrew; that won't help much as the Gospel of John was in Greek.
As for Moses with horns; that's not in my Bible (KJV1611).
Exodus 34: 29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
Do you see the word HORN in there anywhere?

Yeah it probably wont help me with John. I don't know Aramaic either, but I can still tell which translation is better. Gosh.
And has that not been edited from it's original translation to not say he has horns?

My words are plain, rebellious son of Nicodemus. Perhaps you're not yet ready to give yourself over wholly to the Lord of Lords.

You know, perhaps you are right. I understand what it means to be a Christian, superficially of course I am, so normal people don't question it, but trusting a landover man to bring it up, I am not ready to discard Philosophy and Science. One day I hope I do....
One thing I have rejected though is being a liberal Christian. I would never be one of those. I'm an on off switch.

Jerome was the person who mistranslated the book of Exodus to say that Moses had horns. Jerome translated the phrase into "cornuta esset facies sua"; saying "his face was horned" Jerome died in the year 420.
The Moses statue by Michelangelo, was completed in 1515.
The KJV1611, obviously did not have a Horned Moses.

I thought the KJV took a lot of stuff from translated stuff, including as it turns out, this.

If you can find it in the KJV that Moses had horns; I'd like to see it; otherwise, you'll be wrong (I'll gladly admit if I'm wrong; will you?)
The one Jerome translated became the Vulgate.
The KJV is based on the Textus Receptus.

Well it was an RE teacher (who was a woman, and a liberal Christian) who told me that, so I can easily accept what you say as truth. I should have done some better research.

Even the Tyndale doesn't have Moses with horns.
And Moses came doune from mount Sinai and the .ij. tables of witnesse in his hande,
and yet he wyst not that the skynne of his face shone with beames of his comenynge with
him.
It's the translation by Jerome into Latin that has the horns.
It was never Protestant (namely Baptist) doctrine that had a horned Moses; that's a Catholic concept that lasted nearly a thousand years.

Wycliffe says horns, but it was translated from the corrupt Vulgate as well.
And whanne Moises cam doun fro the hil of Synai, he helde twei tablis of witnessyng, and he wiste not that his face was horned [Note: was horned, beemes of wondurful schynyng yeden `forth an hiy [from him] at the maner of hornes, whiche the postle in ij. pistle to Cor. iij. co. clepith the glorie of Moises face, wherfor in Ebreu it is thus, `and he [Israel] knew not that the `liyt [skyn] of his face was horned. ] of the felouschipe of Goddis word.
There are two lineages of text, Unfalsifiable, the Vulgate and the Textus Receptus. The NIV comes from the Vulgate lineage.

Why do you like the TR, it was written hastily by the Roman Catholic Erasmus who was under commercial pressure from the Roman Catholic Church.
KJV, noble effort, but should not be elevated to the status you give it. Doesn't it even contain the apocrypha? What's with that?

What a load of papist propaganda! Where did you get that garbage? Wikipedia? I read the article on on Wikipedia and all I see are a bunch of biased and unsourced opinions.
Did you also check the talk page? The content of that article is hotly contested.

The apostles wrote it. Erasmus merely edited it for printing.

I used to play on a co-ed sand volleyball team through a Babtist church. This verse was the logo on our shirts. Black with hot pink letters. It was no doubt that we never won a game.
If the Lord leads you to it, he will get you through it.
