Default Day 7. Genesis 19-21 - 09-11-2007, 03:25 PM

Genesis 19-21

Today, we get more of Lot's story; the story of Sodom; more on Abraham; and the birth of Isaac.

Today starts with the angels having left Abraham heading to Sodom. They meet Lot at the gate and lot ushers them into his house. Men from the city show up and want to ass-rape the angels, but lot offers his daughters instead. (for a discussion on lot's daughters, click here)

Do you all remember our discussion of the word KNOW. It's used here again.

Genesis 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

The men of the town refuse the daughters, and push Lot, so the angels smote them with blindness.

Genesis 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

I'd imagine it was probably funny to watch the horny blind homers staggering around trying to find the door. (Especially since the angels knew they'd be destroying the entire city the next day.)

The next morning, the angels tell lot to leave.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

(for a discussion of mercy read here)

So the LORD tells Lot to go to the mountain, Lot says no, and he wants to go to the town of Zoar. Then God smites everyone in Sodom and Gomorrah, and on the plains.

24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

PRAISE JESUS for His mercy!!! Praise Him!!!

Not only did God kill the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, but everyone and everything inbetween.

Interestingly enough:

They knew what they were doing when they named the towns.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Don't feel pity for Lot's wife. Lot's daughter seemed to have forgotten their mother rather quickly.

31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

We had a discussion of "in unto" yesterday.

Now, to Genesis 20.

Abraham goes traveling again, this time (like when he went to Egypt) he goes to Gerar.

Genesis 20:2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

Again? Didn't he already do that once with the Pharoah? But wait, how old is Sarah now? She's done menstruating. But still, she's quite the hottie, and the king of Gerar wants to (probably) go in unto her; to KNOW her.

So the LORD goes to the king in a dream, and threatens him for taking Sarah.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.

Abimelech is like, wtf? I was told she was his sister.

Now we have one of the most beautiful verses in the entire Bible (kjv1611)

Genesis 20:7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

Throw in a couple of shalt's and that verse is probably one that people say is too hard to read.

"Know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine." PRAISE JESUS!!!

So the king calls Abraham in and asks why? Abraham said he didn't think the fear of the Lord was in the place, and the people would probably kill him for his hottie wife, so, he said it was his sister... which technically isn't a lie, because she's the daughter of his father, but not the daughter of his mother.

17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. (because the Lord shut up their wombs because the King took Sarah)

Now, on to Genesis 21.

2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

The Lord keeps His word! (when he chooses to)

Once again, Sarah decides to expel Hagar and Ishmael from their home.

10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

Abraham didn't really want to cast her out, but Sarah was being really bitchy about it, so he did. Remember, earlier in Genesis 14:14, Abraham took his 318 men and went and got back all the stuff from Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham, is a very very rich man.

Genesis 21:14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

The man has thousands of sheep, herds of cattle, 318 men working for him, silver, manservants, woman servants...

and he gave the mother of his firstborn son, a bottle of water and bread and sent them on their way.

Later, there's a squable between Abraham and Abimelech over a well, so Abraham plants a grove there.

And that's about it for today.

Highlights:

God kills everyone in Sodom and Gomorrah.

God kills Lot's wife.

Lot (in a drunken state) is raped by both of his daughters.

Abraham AGAIN tells the ruler of a nation that his wife is his sister.

Sarah AGAIN sends Hagar away.

Sarah gives birth to Isaac.

Praise Jesus!!!

Did you read this thread? Yes, an unconscious man being raped by his daughters on two successive nights may seem "gross" at first, but who among us can truly say that they might not feel the need to rape their opposite-gender parent (only a true sicko would rape their same-gender parent) in that situation? Who are the real criminals here - the people innocently having intercourse with their parents without their parent's consent, or the women who think it's somehow acceptable for them to work outside the home? Never forget 9/11, people!

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Thank you for posting the discussion links. Pastor Ezekiel cleared up the misconceptions I had about Lot's daughters.

Oh, this story shows that even though woman are harlots, harlots can sometime make good things! (aka bearing their father sons!) Praise Jesus!

Yours in Christ
