Default Day 111a. 1 Chronicles 1-3 - 01-23-2008, 09:39 PM

1 Chronicles 1-3

Due to a fault at Biblegateway.com, there is no section for 1 Chronicles 1-3. So, I've added Day 111a.

Today we get:
  • Genealogies
  • just Genealogies

1 Chronicles 1

1 Adam, Sheth, Enosh,

You may wonder why are we reviewing the people who have already been born? Well, it's important because it gives us a direct line from Adam all the way through the final king of Judah, Zedekiah.

Ok, so now we have a reason to follow the genealogies, but you ask again, why? Aren't we told not to?

Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Friends, the above verse says you aren't supposed to worry about YOUR genealogy, but it is important to know where our saviour came from.

So let's look at some more of the interesting people listed in the first book of Chronicles.

4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

We get a slight bit of confusion right off the bat.

The first verse lists Adam then his son Seth, then Seth's son Enos (Seth here has an extra H, as does Enos).

Then in verse 4, we see Noah listed with his 3 sons using the same punctuation in verse 1 where it listed father, son, grandson. Here is shows; father, son, son, son.

Remember, Ham is the one who possibly raped his father.

24 Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah,

Now we are back to the father, son, grandson layout.

Arphaxad is one of the most important grandchildren of Noah, because HIS is the line that Abraham came from.

27 Abram; the same is Abraham.

Yes, that Abraham.

You'll note that Abraham's nephew, Lot, is not listed in the family tree here.

34 And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac; Esau and Israel.

Jacob and Esau.

1 Chronicles 2

Now we get a list of the sons of Israel. (Who can name them without reading?)

1 These are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun,

2 Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

^^^

3 The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born unto him of the daughter of Shua the Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.

Er and Onan, killed by God.

4 And Tamar his daughter in law bore him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.

Remember Pharez was born after Tamar played the prostitute.

12 And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,

Remember, Boaz married Ruth, and the first child born was supposed to be Mahlon's child, but for some reason the family tree skips him. Mahlon's name is missing from 1 Chronicles.

15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh:

Jesse's boys were not Bo and Luke (they were his nephews anyway); but: Eliab, Abinadab, Shimma, Nethaneel, Raddai, Ozem and David.

1 Chronicles 3

1 Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess:

David's boys: Amnon, Daniel, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah, Ithream, Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, Nogah, Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.

That's right, David ran out of names for his children, so he used Elishama and Eliphelet twice.

10 And Solomon's son was Rehoboam, Abia his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son,

All kings.

11 Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,

12 Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,

13 Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,

14 Amon his son, Josiah his son.

15 And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.

This section of 1 Chronicles 3, is pretty much a listing of the kings of Judah.

16 And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.

Down to Zedekiah, the final king of Judah.

And thus ends today's reading.

So what have we learned today?

1. They still haven't given the credit for Obed to Mahlon.
2. David should have gone with the George Foreman method of naming his kids, it'd be slightly easier to remember to blame David, instead of saying, No, the other Elishama!
3. So far, we've just gone through the Judah line, there are probably 11 or 12 more to go.

Judges 9:21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
