Default Day 201. Isaiah 1-3 - 09-24-2009, 06:00 PM

Isaiah 1-3

1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Isaiah was an 8th century BC prophet. He was from the kingdom of Judah, as opposed to the kingdom of Israel. He lasted through four different Judah kings. Uzziah's reign was for 52 years, Jotham's was for 16, Ahaz was for 16, and Hezekiah was for 29. Added all together, that's 113 years. However, Isaiah probably started his career at the end of Uzziah's reign, and ended in the fourteenth year of Hezekiah. There were 46 total years during Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, and a couple in Uzziah, so it was in the high forties to low fifties.

Most people assume that Isaiah was related to the kings, as there is an assumption that his father Amoz was the brother of King Amaziah.

The authorship of the book has come into question. Pretty much everyone agrees the Isaiah wrote the first 39 chapters, many others say that there was a second Isaiah who wrote chapters 40-66. Still others believe that there's a third Isaiah who wrote chapters 56-66.

Some people say that the book has been written and added to for over 4 centuries.

The Isaiah Scroll was a 2,100 year old scroll that was found with the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was the only complete scroll in the 220 scroll collection.

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

If Isaiah follows the same timeline as 2 Kings, then when Isaiah was a youth Israel was invaded by the Assyrians. Isaiah would have known that everytime that the people rebelled against the LORD, they got attacked by other nations. Here, in verse 2, we see that the people are rebelling, so only bad things can happen.

4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

God is angry, they are probably going to be attacked.

11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

The people were still giving their offerings, but God didn't want them any more. They were not sincere. God would rather have a tiny offering given sincerely, than everything given to him, when you don't care.

13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

God said, don't give me anything, don't come to church, don't worry about just offering lip service to me, the hypocrisy that you perform on Saturday doesn't make up for all your sins the rest of the week. The people of Judah were turds, and you can't polish a turd. Even if it is polished, it's still a shiny turd.

19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

If the people stop their weekday sins, they will be forgiven. If not, they will be attacked and overrun.

24 Therefore saith the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:

25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:

If they don't stop, God will stop pestering his enemies, and start smiting Judah.

26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.

If the people don't clean up, God will wipe off the chalkboard, and start fresh. When Israel was new (the age of Judges) the people listened, He's willing to take them back to that era again.

28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

Clean the room, or God will clean it for you. Put away your toys, or God will put them away for you. If he does put your toys away, you don't know if he'll put them away, or throw them away. Your toys have led to rebellion, your favorite toys... those are the ones he'll throw away first. You'll lose your GI Joes and He-Man; you'll be stuck with those crappy alphabet blocks, "oh look I spelled CAT".

Isaiah 2

2And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

Chapter 2 has a much different tone. Chapter 1 was all about impending destruction. Even with the first verse, 2 has a much more happy feel.

3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Perhaps Isaiah is showing the good things that can happen if the people do what they are told.

5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

He's begging them to do what's right.

6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.

But, they aren't quite there yet. They are just as bad as their neighbours.

10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.

This fear of the LORD, is actual terror of the LORD. Not the beginning of wisdom fear, the holy crap he's gonna kill us, fear.

17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

God will make the big small. Because he's pissed.

21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

I would think hiding in a cave isn't the best idea during an earthquake, but if you think back to Sodom and Gomorrah (which were referenced in Isaiah 1, if you were following along), then hiding in a cave during a fire and brimstone deluge, might be a good idea.

Isaiah 3

1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water.

When Israel/Judah are conquered, it's not because God failed. It is because the people failed God. Faith healers work the same way. You may pray for healing, but if you really don't have that faith, and just have hope ("I sure do hope this works"; instead of "I don't need chemotherapy, I have faith that God will heal me").

5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

When the people don't have faith, they will be oppressed. Sometimes, by people they normally wouldn't be oppressed by. Imagine being an elder, and having the prophet of the LORD tell you that "if you don't change your evil ways, and get back to worshipping the LORD; then all your elder positions won't matter, the impetuous youth will be mocking your wisdom; God will make it happen". A self-righteous elder would look at the prophet and say something like "well, this kid (remember Isaiah was still kind of young) doesn't know what he's talking about; no stupid teenager will tell me what to do". A wise elder might look at his ways and see where the problem is, and fix it. The ignorant elder empowers the youth.

6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:

10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

The wise will realize their error (remember all those Proverbs about how a wise man loves to be reproved?).

11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

A fool hates correction. Remember, a fool hates rebuke, but gets stripes.

25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

Also, the pretty women will be made ugly.

So what have we learned today?

1. God hates vain offerings.

2. If the people change, Judah will be a tourist destination.

3. Wise elders will make the needed change, foolish elders will be taken away in chains.

I think this is my favorite Scripture in this chapter, Brother V.

I don't think I have ever enjoyed Isaiah at all so much, until your Godly commentary on it.

It has been too long since I read it. Too bad I already skipped to the end of the Book, but I can't wait for the parts that prophecy the coming of Jesus! Shout Glory!

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.
