Yes, Jesus told Peter that he would play a key role in building His church. This passage has absolutely nothing to do with your dress-wearing politician in Rome. There is nothing that establishes apostolic succession or papal infallibility.
Again, I must request that you use our site's search feature before embarrassing yourself by trotting out worn-out arguments that have been debunked before. You aren't the first Papist to try to show up here trying to debate us, and I'm sure you won't be the last to leave with your tail between your legs once you realize that we already know all your lies.
Catholicism is nothing but Roman paganism coated with a thin veneer of Christianity, invented hundreds of years after Christ, as a calculated political move by Emperor Constantine, the first Pontifex Maximus. It is with him that your "apostolic succession" begins. Real Christians were persecuted (along with several kooky gnostic sects) but real Christianity still managed to survive to this day.

Fundamentalist attacks on priestly celibacy come in a number of different forms—not all compatible with one another. There is almost no other subject about which so many different confusions exist.
The first and most basic confusion is thinking of priestly celibacy as a dogma or doctrine—a central and irreformable part of the faith, believed by Catholics to come from Jesus and the apostles. Thus some Fundamentalists make a great deal of a biblical reference to Peter’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:30), apparently supposing that, if Catholics only knew that Peter had been married, they would be unable to regard him as the first pope. Again, Fundamentalist time lines of "Catholic inventions" (a popular literary form) assign "mandatory priestly celibacy" to this or that year in Church history, as if prior to this requirement the Church could not have been Catholic.
These Fundamentalists are often surprised to learn that even today celibacy is not the rule for all Catholic priests. In fact, for Eastern Rite Catholics, married priests are the norm, just as they are for Orthodox and Oriental Christians.
Even in the Eastern churches, though, there have always been some restrictions on marriage and ordination. Although married men may become priests, unmarried priests may not marry, and married priests, if widowed, may not remarry. Moreover, there is an ancient Eastern discipline of choosing bishops from the ranks of the celibate monks, so their bishops are all unmarried.
The tradition in the Western or Latin-Rite Church has been for priests as well as bishops to take vows of celibacy, a rule that has been firmly in place since the early Middle Ages. Even today, though, exceptions are made. For example, there are married Latin-Rite priests who are converts from Lutheranism and Episcopalianism.
As these variations and exceptions indicate, priestly celibacy is not an unchangeable dogma but a disciplinary rule. The fact that Peter was married is no more contrary to the Catholic faith than the fact that the pastor of the nearest Maronite Catholic church is married.

Why would they do that? If it had any backing in God's word (which it doesn't), then people would have been doing it since Biblical times; the fact that you just started doing it in the Middle Ages is proof that you're just making this gibberish up as you go along. You're basically just wiccans with a longer history.

Because it has nothing to do with Christianity. Either the Godly Institution of Marriage is a good thing, or it isn't.
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Forbidding marriage?
To the first charge: Does the Catholic Church forbid marriage? Not at all. It forbids marriage to no one.
The charge could hardly be more absurd since the Catholic Church regards marriage as a sacrament. In the Catholic view, marriage is a great blessing; it is simply not for everyone. Some may renounce marriage for purposes of religion. Christ himself indicated this when he said that some "have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 19:12). [In context, Christ may mean those who have refused to remarry lest they commit adultery (see Matt. 19:9-11), but the principle applies in other contexts as well. Some people, for the sake of the kingdom, refuse to marry and raise a family.].
This was a practice even in the Old Testament. God told the prophet Jeremiah not to take a wife and have children (Jer. 16:1-4) since doing so would be inconsistent with the turbulent ministry to which God was calling him. In Jeremiah we find a parallel to a modern priest, a man who refrains from marrying and having a family in order to free himself to fulfill the demands of ministry.
This was not a pattern restricted to the Old Testament. Paul counsels people to refrain from marrying. He says, "It is well for a man not to touch a woman. But because of the temptation to immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. . . . I say this by way of concession, not of command. I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain single as I do. . . . I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord, but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided.
"And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit, but the married woman is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord. . . . [H]e who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do better" (1 Cor. 7:1-2, 6-9, 32-35, 38).
Paul regards marriage as an option, but not always the preferable one, since married people have divided interests that hinder them from being wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord. In 2 Timothy 2:3-4 he applies this insight directly to full-time ministers. He tells his apprentice Timothy, "Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him." Timothy is told that he must share in suffering by not participating in "civilian pursuits," such as marrying and having a family, in order to pursue his calling as a soldier of Jesus Christ and a full-time minister of the gospel.
Elsewhere in Paul we find the idea of a vow of celibacy which commits a person to a life of continence. In 1Timothy 5 Paul says, "Honor widows who are real widows. . . . She who is a real widow, and is left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. . . . Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband, and she must be well attested for her good deeds, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, relieved the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way. But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when they grow wanton against Christ they desire to marry, and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge" (1 Tim. 5:3, 5, 9-12).
Paul here describes an order of widows, supported by the Church, who are known for prayer, relief for the sick, devotion to doing good, and their pledge of celibacy. This order has the same underlying principles as a modern order of nuns, a group of women who have taken vows to lead a celibate life of serving God. There is even biblical precedent for orders of contemplative nuns. They follow the example of Anna, the prophetess who "did not depart from the Temple, worshipping with fasting and prayer night and day" (Luke 2:37).
Is the organization of widows Paul provided for just a loose association of women who could enter or leave the roll of widows at their discretion? No. Paul says not to enroll younger widows because, being subject to "youthful passions" (2 Tim. 2:22), they desire to marry and "incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge." When they were enrolled on the list of widows, they took a pledge not to marry. Before this they were free to marry, but on entering the roll they committed to live as "unmarried women ... anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit" (1 Cor. 7:34).
The New Testament tells of a vow of celibacy--a formal commitment to lead the single life--and Paul incorporates it into his regulations for the order of proto-nuns he discusses in 1Timothy 5. Ironically, this vow of celibacy is mentioned in 1 Timothy 5, just a chapter after the "doctrines of demons" passage in 1 Timothy 4!
Further proof that the Catholic practice of ministerial celibacy is not what Paul is discussing in 1 Timothy 4:1-3 is that the people who are forbidding marriage in that passage are teaching it as a doctrine, but Catholics regard priestly celibacy only as a discipline. Catholics freely admit that nothing in the Bible or apostolic Tradition requires ministers to be celibate; it is simply a good idea, as Paul indicates. The Catholic Church's requirement that its (Western rite) ministers take Paul's advice and be celibate is in principle like a Protestant denomination's requirement that its ministers have a seminary degree--something Protestants do not because they think the Bible requires it, but because it is a good idea.
Only the Latin or Western rite (the largest rite in the Church) requires celibacy. The other (Eastern) rites of the Church do not require celibacy and have married priests. Even the Latin rite makes exceptions to its policy: If a married minister from a denomination such as Lutheranism or Anglicanism becomes Catholic, he may be allowed to be ordained as a priest.
The Latin rite could, should the pope become convinced that it is necessary, rescind the discipline of celibacy, but it is not likely that this will occur in the near future, [Contrary to the view of some, the current priest shortage in the developed world is not caused by the celibacy requirement, for even the eastern rites, which do not require celibacy, suffer from it] for great good has come to the Church as a result of the policy (a fact anti-Catholics never mention).[There have even been benefits the apostle Paul does not discuss, such as preventing a caste-system developing in Europe during the middle ages by the creation of a priestly class in which the father's occupation was passed on from father to son, as was the practice in medieval society in general. Because of celibacy, priests did not pass on their positions, and the priesthood was open to men of every class. There were even popes who started life as the sons of peasants.]. In any event, the Catholic Church forbids no one to marry, although the Church does say, in the Latin rite, that a man volunteering to be ordained also is expected to volunteer to remain celibate. And if he wants to marry? Then he can do so, without pursuing the priestly vocation.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.

Reason 13 I actually find offencive and also disturbing that the Christians have not even reacted to it.
Parking spaces have nothing to do with religous practices but more to do with common curtesy and kindness(that thing which Jesus preached).
People born with disabilities are also "Gods creations" are they not ? The Old Testament doesn't state other wise.
I am sure they if could walk they would embrace the chance to do.

No, but the Old Testament does say God created evil.
2 Kings 6:33 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Lamentations 3:38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
As you can see, just because God creates something doesn't mean it's good.
Quote:
I am sure they if could walk they would embrace the chance to do.

No. The Bible says if cripples wanted to walk, they could, if they had faith.
John 5:5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
Mark 2:7Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? 8And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
9Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
10But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
11I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
12And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

Mathew 8, verses 1 thru 3: 'When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.' Jesus expressed kindness when he reached out his hand and said to the man "I am willing". Jesus was sympathetic to the man's condition. Jesus saw the man's faith. Leprosy was a dreaded disease and lepers were avoided and shunned. By reaching out His hand and touching the man, Jesus was demonstrating kindness. Jesus didn't stop there, He showed forth goodness by performing a miracle when He said to the man "Be clean!" and the man was cured of his leprosy.
There is old saying " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Meaning treat someone with kindness and courtesy if you wish the same in return.
Actions speak louder than words. Do you think Jesus would have helped or hindered someone with disabilities ?

No, but the Old Testament does say God created evil.

People with disabiltles aren't evil to my knowledge.
Some 2000 years ago when people highly supterstitous and fearful then the effect of Jesus touching could have strong effects.
It's what called mind of matter.
If a cripple can walk of faith alone then can a man fly on a faith alone ?
With enough faith will in rain Africa so the starving millions can be saved ? Since there is possible 1000's of evanglists there then the must be prayers to match.

I neither like or dislike you. I don't know anyone here well to do so. If you interuppt my questions as hateful then that is your own fault.

It doesn't say that. You are wrongly assuming that the reason Jesus healed the sick was out of sympathy for their condition. If that were true, then why didn't he heal all the lepers, all the blind, and all the lame, instead of just a few people here and there while a crowd was watching?
Instead of trying to guess the reason and ascribe motives, let's read what the Bible has to say about why Jesus healed people. The reason Jesus healed people was as a sign and wonder to show people He was God, to make the works of God manifest. We know this, because He said that was the reason in John 9.

I don't support murder since I belive life is sacred. Thou shalt not kill is one the most important beliefs of Christianity.
But God did to seem to murder alot people in the Old Testmament.

If creation is now flawed then why does God create people who are gay ?
As being hetrosexual is viewed as normal then being being gay is flawed.

May I ask why you are plagiarizing from here: http://www.d-u-c-k-s.com/new_page_13.htm
Just as I suspected, as an atheist you have no knowledge of the Bible, but you are so full of evil pride you refuse to admit this, and instead resort to your lot's usual tricks - lying and stealing. You should be ashamed of yourself, but you won't be, as I know you have no conscience.
[/qiote].
It's an example of one Christian group stating that Jesus healed the lepor of out kindness and compassion while another states he didn't.
So who of the two groups has the correct interpretation of that passage ?
There is other example of Jesus being kind:
Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
So Jesus healed "all manner of sickness" in Galilee. Did he do so just to show off or was it an act of kindness ?
Matthew 14:14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
If Jesus had no compassion for people then why continue to heal their ailments as he travelled from town to town?
Matthew 15:32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."
Jesus showing compassion to the those without food.
Quote:
As Jesus is God, the creator of the universe, He is responsible for all of the disabled people who have ever lived. Think about that.
|
I don't recall Jesus instructing his Apostles that there evil.
Quote:
Does that also explain how Jesus turned water into wine, exorcised demons, healed every disease, cured lepers, stopped fevers, stopped a storm, raised the dead, cured hemorrhages, gave sight to the blind, healed withered hands, made the dumb talk, fed five thousand with two loaves and five fishes, walked on water, let the deaf hear, cured dropsy, cursed a fig tree, reformed the ear of a man who had had it sliced off by a sword, resurrected from the dead, and ascended into heaven. Does it?
|
In order for Jesus to appear divine then miracles would have be recorded. Without those miraces he wouldn't be known The Savio. But all those actions show acts of kindness. Every act performed meant there was a motive behind it. In Jesus' case it was to help and aid those who were in need.
Quote:
We do not hate. We show the utmost love. If we hated them, we would allow them to wallow in their filthy sins and go to hell. But we love them so much we tell them how evil they are in hopes they get saved.
|
Why do you assume that disabled people are evil ? How are they full sin ? Would you the say the same if your own child was born blind or with a disability. Isn't it prejuding someone just because they are different ?
A child in the womb doesn't ask to born disabled and they aren't to blame if they are.
Now you have me cunfused.
As an inquistive person should I consider being a Christian who without doubt will accuse disabled people of being sinners. Should I have no compassion, kindness or feelings towards people and watch them suffer.
It would seem to contraduct the "frock wearing Pontiffs" vision of Christianty which is that compassion, kindness, peace and uniting everyone in the name Christ.
If that is the type of Christian you me want to become then I am saddened.
I was always told to be kind towards others, to treat people with respect and that we are were created equal. I was told not to judge a books by its cover but to read the pages first.
But it looks as though you want me to be the opposite. So which is it to be ?

I am actually Agnostic and don't believe or disbelive in the presence of God. I have also never wished to harm anyone and it is my belief that violence doesn't solve problems but will often create more of them.
Some Athiests aren't violent people but more often than relgious extremeists are.

Yes I'd agree The Old Testament contains murder, stoning to death, genoside and punishment.
The New Testament is wrote by the Apostles who like all men have their biases and prejudices.
I am not sure you are aware but Shariah Law is based on the Old Testmament and it is the reason why "adulterers" are still stoned to death and public executions are still happening.
Is that how want to America to be, some type of Christian fundalmentalist country without courts of law etc ?
Quote:
So why did God give us the Bible, hmm?
|
The Old Testament and its Laws were handed to Moses in time when there was laws to speak off. Ancient Egypt is a good example when Royal Dynasty often commited incest and murder. So some type consequence had to be created for those actions.
The New Testament as stated was wrote by the Apostles witnessing the acts of Jesus as he travelled the land. Like all friends the accounts they give may not always be objective.

Maybe I prefer to DUCKS interpretation of Jesus actions as he is portrayed as being compassionate and kind.
Since leporsy in those times meant being outcast then wouldn't Jesus giving the man a human touch be an act of kindess.
You avoided answering the question though. Who has the right interpretation of that passage.

They are being punished for their parents' sins.

I am sure there must devout Christians who had children that were born with a disability.
It's quite presumptious to assume that everyone born with a disability has parents who sinned.

They are genuine Christians.

The Popes message seems to differ compared to yours. While the Pope tells us that Jesus was kind and that we should do the same to each other.
Your message would seem to be the hellfire and brimstone approach and that The Bible doesn't show acts of kindness but should be used as form of punishment.

And you turned out an atheist. Surprise, surprise.

There is Christians I know who would talk to me in civil manner and ask why I altered my beliefs. They would ask me what caused such an event to happen in my life. They wouldn't automatically assume I was wrong but rather they would try to find why and understand my reasons for doing so.
I was afterall not born a "disbeliver" but events in life have made me change my beliefs.

Now we're getting somewhere. Please go make a thread of your own in the "introductions" section and tell us what lead you to abandon Jesus.
We can help heal that pain, friend. Jesus has called you here for a reason.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:
Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

Re: 101 reasons why Atheists are WRONG !!! -

Reason No. 1 - The Holy Bible!
Atheists 'claim' that God doesn't exist, yet the Bible proves them WRONG! I can see the Bible, hold it in my hand, and know 1000% that it exists! As God wrote the Bible, this proves that he MUST EXIST too! How dumb these Atheists are!
I can write a book and say I am God. Not to mention the bible is defined as "The words of God", I don't remember seeing it called "The word of God". That would mean God did not write it.
Reason No. 2 - Evil-ution from Monkeys!
If we really evolved from monkeys, why do monkeys STILL exist? Surely they would've evolved too? And why don't we have tails or swing from trees or speak in monkey-talk? These atheists must be pretty deluded to believe such nonsense!
It is painfully obvious that you are ignorant and deluded, like most people on these forums. It is extremely possible that only a certain strain of monkeys evolved, passing the DNA on to its children, all while the others with the old DNA still reproduce. However you never even considered such a possibility.
Reason No. 3 - The 'Big Bang'
Atheists believe there was a 'Big Bang' which created the Earth and the Universe and all things?? Well, what created the 'Big Bang'?? And what was there before it 'banged'??? Ask ANY atheist - they won't be able to answer you! Why? Because God created the 'Big Bang'! And then went on to create the Earth and everything in just 6 days! Praise Jesus!
Just as we can't prove how the big bang got there, you can't prove how God got there. In your logic, God was always there, but applying that logic to the big bang, that would mean in theory it is just as possible that the contents of the big bang always existed.
Reason No. 4 - Dinosaurs
Most dumb atheists believe that man and dinosaurs didn't inhabit the Earth at the same time. However, we know this to be a LIE! Didn't Noah ride dinosaurs onto the Ark? Aren't Dinosaurs mentioned throughout the Bible?
Do you have any proof that the story of Noah's Ark is true at all? I read a book and they mentioned batman, that must mean batman is real too right?
Checkmate - Atheist!
Maybe when you can support your arguement with
facts, instead of ideas you will win.
