I have officiated at several Holy Matrimony unions...It's one of our Seven Sacraments.

I say the KJV gives an inaccurate interpretation. The original Greek term is "porneia," meaning if the marriage was invalid in the first place...So yes, separation is permissible if there's no marriage.
