Default Day 258. Daniel 4-6 - 07-14-2010, 09:47 PM

Daniel 4-6

Daniel 4

1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

2 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.

Daniel chapter 4 is apparently written by Nebuchadnezzar himself.

5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Once again, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream.

7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

This time, he remembered the dream, so he told the smart people, but they didn't know what it was. This time, he didn't try to have them all killed for not knowing the answer.

8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my God, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

If you have someone who knows everything, why would you go to something else first? It's like people who try to do things themselves, but then they realize that they can't do anything by themselves, or with anyone else, until they finally accept that God is the answer.

Nebuchadnezzar's dream was of a big tree, that was really big. Then it got cut down.

16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

That part doesn't really make sense when talking about a tree, but oh well.

So Daniel thinks about the dream for a while, then tells Nebuchadnezzar:

22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

Nebuchadnezzar was the tree. And the tree being cut down was because he was exalting himself. And he'd go crazy for seven years.

27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

A year later, Nebuchadnezzar walks into the palace.

30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

At which point, God made him go crazy and make him think he was a wolf for seven years.

33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

Some people think he turned into a werewolf.

34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

When God takes everything from you, he will return it when you praise him again. Just ask Job.

36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

Oddly, history doesn't really recount this part of Nebuchadnezzar's reign. Remember, he reigned from 605 to 562 BC. So, we'll need to find a chunk of seven years to find out when this happened.

In 605 he started the siege of Jerusalem.

Daniel 2, it states that it was in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar, and that would have been 604 or 603.

In 601 he attempted an invasion of Egypt. So it wasn't early in his reign.

In 597 he captured Jerusalem.

From 585 to 572 he had a siege of Tyre. There is time in-between 597 and 585 to do the 7 year insanity. But you have to add an extra year, from the interpretation of the dream, to the event. There is time between the Jerusalem capture and Tyre for that event.

In 568 he went to Egypt again. So it wasn't after Tyre, as there's only 6 years left.

So, this dream and subsequent insanity would have had to have taken place in-between the capture of Jerusalem, and the siege of Tyre.

Daniel 5

After Nebuchadnezzar was done ruling in 562, he was followed by Amel-Marduk. After Marduk was done in 560, Neriglissar was king. He lasted four years until 556, when he was succeeded by Labashi-Marduk. Labashi didn't last a year before he was replaced by Nabonidus. Nabonidus rule lasted until 539.

1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Belshazzar was the son of Nabonidus, who after three years of ruling went and worshiped the moon god, Sin. Belshazzar took over in 553. Some people think that the Nebuchadnezzar listed in Daniel 4, refers to Nabonidus and his trip to Tayma to go worship the moon (more werewolf imagery).

3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

That really pissed off God. Having people, including concubines, drink from his dishes.

5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

God came down and wrote some words on the wall.

6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Belshazzar became Belshittar, because he crapped himself, and his knees were knocking together, like in cartoons when people are scared.

The king called in everyone to try to read it, but no one could (sound like a good recurring theme? So the king's wife says, call in Daniel.

13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

Daniel's like, yeah, that's me.

The king says, that if he can interpret the "writing on the wall" he'll be made third in command in the country (Balshazzar, Nabonidus, then Daniel), and be dressed in fine robes.

Daniel then retells the story of the Nebuchadnezzar dream of the tree, and the subsequent insanity, he also mentions the redemption of that Nebuchadnezzar (possibly Nabonidus).

25 And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. The first and most impressive "writing on the wall".

26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

Spoken twice for emphasis.

27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

He's a cheat, and short stacked.

28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

Somehow UPHARSIN also means PERES.

29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

So, Daniel was once again, put over the kings gate.

30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

On October 10, 539, Nabonidus surrendered Babylon to Cyrus. Since Daniel was around for all these events, that means he lived from at least 605 to 539 BC, making him at least 66 at this point.

Cyrus was from Persia, Darius was a Mede (as evidenced in verse 28).

Daniel 6

1 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;

2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.

After the reign of the Babylonian empire, Darius set up a bunch of people to be the regents. He set Daniel to be their leader.

The other guys didn't like Daniel being their boss, so they conspired against him.

7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

Darius was like, that's a cool idea, so he made it a law.

10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Then the bad guys caught Daniel praying, and brought him before the king.

14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

Darius didn't want to do it, but he knew he had to follow the law.

16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

Daniel in the lions den.

Remember, Daniel was at least 66 (probably closer to 80) when the Medes and Persians took over Babylon. How often do you see a depiction of Daniel in the Lions den where he looks like an old retiree? There are a few exceptions, but normally he's a kid. The images I remember all have him as being young. The stuff I colored as a child, had him as a youthful boy.

19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.

Then, in justice, the king put all Daniels accusers into the den.

24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.

But it wasn't just the accusers, but also their wives and children. That's justice. An accusation, even though it wasn't false, resulted in the accusers being killed.

26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

Darius was a wise king.

So what have we learned today?

1. Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that caused him to possibly turn into a werewolf. Part of lycanthropy involves the moon. Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 was probably Nabonidus, who left for several years to go worship the moon.

2. The first "writing on the wall" involved Nabonidus' son, Belshazzar. Who was dumb enough to drink from the temple dishes.

3. Daniel wasn't a child when he was thrown into the lions den, but was closer to being 80 when the events happened.
