In 2002, a priest in this region of Illinois got into some trouble for drugs, and just today something reminded me of it. I did some digging around, and found this article on a Catholic newspaper website. My apologies if this was posted 6 years ago and is old news.

Former pastor sentenced for drugs; asks forgiveness

The Diocese of Peoria has expressed prayers for a former pastor and "all those who were scandalized or hurt in any way by his illegal activities" after Jeffrey Windy was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison and three years probation for drug violations.

Windy, 31, the former pastor of St. Patrick's Parish in Sheffield and St. Margaret Mary, Wyanet, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute the drug GHB. During testimony and subsequent published reports, it was revealed that Windy and other defendants became involved with the banned depressant, known as a "date-rape drug," for the purposes of building muscle for weight-lifting.

He was one of six men from the Quad Cities area charged in the case. All received prison time, ranging from 21/2 to ten years.
Following the sentencing hearing last Thursday in Davenport, Iowa, the diocese released the following statement:

"Jeff Windy has pleaded guilty to a serious offense and understands that he should be punished according to the laws of this nation. We hope and pray that he will use the time during his incarceration to face his personal issues. We also pray especially for all those who were scandalized or hurt in any way by his illegal activities.

"It should also be noted that in December of 2001, prior to his arrest, the diocese was made aware of Windy's personal drug use. He was immediately sent for a drug dependency evaluation and treatment. It was decided that he should undergo outpatient therapy for an undetermined amount of time.
"Upon his arrest in January 2002, Windy was immediately removed from all priestly assignments and activities. He was asked not to refer to himself as 'Reverend' or 'Father,' and to no longer wear clerical garb."

At last Thursday's sentencing hearing, Windy broke down sobbing after reading just a few sentences of his prepared statement.

Saying "my dreams have now been shattered," he apologized for having "shamed my family, my parish, my brother priests." He also said he cannot forgive himself for "being such a fool." The site of Windy's incarceration was not known at Catholic Post press time.

The drug, gamma-hydroxybutyrate, was legal and sold in health-food stores when the men started using it, later becoming addicted. It became a controlled substance in March 2000.

Amen Brother Hackwith, I don't ever recall seeing this. We here have been warning cathylicks for ages that the results of transubstantiation are not what is advertised. Your post raises new concerns about just what the cathylicks might be putting those eucharist wafers. To the cathylicks wine and wafers means pagan Bacchanalian orgies and alter boy rape.

Police Arrest Priest in Norton Drug Raid

Pastor Charged with Cultivating Marijuana at Rectory. Second Man Accused of Trafficking 35 Plants Seized

The three books confiscated by Norton police seemed out of place in the private office of a Catholic priest.

Opium for the Masses. Marijuana Growers Guide. Marijuana Medicine.

But police said what was going on in the Prince of Peace Catholic Church rectory had little to do with church business.

Following a search of the residence and office of the Rev. Richard A. Arko, Norton police announced Thursday they had arrested the 40-year-old pastor on a charge of illegal cultivation of marijuana.

A second man, Jensen J. Powell, 24, who is unemployed and living at the four-bedroom Shannon Avenue rectory, was charged with trafficking in marijuana. Both are fifth-degree felonies carrying prison sentences of six months to a year.

Police confiscated not only the books but also 35 marijuana plants ranging from 6 inches to 4 feet, grow lights, electric transformers and air purifiers, all from a room that police said was being used to grow marijuana.

According to police, the plants were growing in a second-floor bedroom of the rectory.

Police took two baggies of marijuana and $1,100 in cash from Powell. They allege that Powell was selling marijuana from the residence.

Both men appeared Thursday before Barberton Municipal Judge Michael McNulty.

McNulty released Arko on a signature bond and set a $10,000 cash bond for Powell. The men are due back in court Wednesday.

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland placed Arko on immediate "leave of absence from priestly ministry," according to a press release from the diocese.

Attorney Peter Cahoon, who represents the priest, told Judge McNulty that in the meantime Arko will be living at a home he owns on West Tuscarawas Avenue in Barberton.

Prince of Peace parish is situated on the Norton-Barberton border, with the church and rectory in Norton at 1263 Shannon Ave., and the parish hall and parking lot in Barberton.

Norton Lt. Thad Hete was reluctant to discuss details of the investigation, such as how he came to suspect Arko of growing marijuana for sale in the rectory.

But he said investigators -- including Barberton police and the Summit County Drug Unit -- were able to connect the plants to Arko.

"We heard whisperings for some time," Hete said. "This wasn't a fishing expedition. What we found in there is what we expected to find."

The arrest, however, came as a surprise to parishioners at Prince of Peace, who describe Arko as a deeply spiritual man.

"I can't believe he would do anything that God wouldn't want him to do," said Anne Goch. "I can't believe he would do anything to break the law or to hurt anybody."

Goch was a member of St. Mary Church in Barberton for more than 70 years.

Arko, who was ordained in 1990, came to St. Mary's in 1994 to serve as administrator.

In 2001, he was assigned as administrator of Sacred Heart in Barberton and served both parishes until they merged July 1, 2002. After the parishes merged, the name was changed to Prince of Peace and Arko became pastor in March 2003.

Betty Spetich converted to Catholicism and joined Sacred Heart about two years ago. She said Arko, who guided her through her religious instruction, was instrumental in her conversion.

"When I first heard Father Arko, I just thought he's a priest I would like to get to know and I would like to join the church under his leadership," Spetich said. "I love Father Arko and we have great faith in him and we'll stand behind him all the way."

Spetich said the parish has enjoyed steady growth under Arko's leadership because he is able to relate to people of all ages.

"He's such a good friend to everyone. He lives out his religion," Spetich said. "He would help anyone in need and everyone loves him -- from the young children to the senior citizens."

Arko, who is also a yogi, has brought new parishioners to the church through Sacred Ground Yoga.

Becki Haller, who attended some of Arko's yoga classes and worked with him on a program for mentally and physically challenged people, attended Arko's arraignment. She described Arko as a dear friend she has known for five or six years.

"He's a friend unconditionally and I want him to know I'll be there," Haller said. "I'll pray things go well for him and he can continue to use all of his gifts and talents to help people."

Priest's Arrest on Drug Charge Is Seen as
Blow to Archdiocese

He was the fastest-rising priest from his seminary class, and his future in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York seemed unlimited. James E. White had been the first from his class to be named monsignor, had served in the highly visible post of associate pastor at St. Patrick's Cathedral, and had even worked briefly on the personal staff of John Cardinal O'Connor.

And so by 1996, when he was chosen to run an important pre-seminary program to help college students interested in the priesthood, Monsignor White was emerging as an important role model, one of the few prominent black priests in an archdiocese deeply concerned about expanding its reach among black residents.

Yet that stellar background has only deepened the sense of personal tragedy felt by his friends and fellow priests after Monsignor White was arrested on misdemeanor drug possession charges on Tuesday. Priests who know Monsignor White expressed shock yesterday at the news of his arrest, saying it seemed completely out of character for the 50-year-old priest they described as quiet and gentle.

Several priests who have known Monsignor White for years, including some who were in his seminary class, said they had never seen any evidence of involvement with drugs. They added that his arrest was painful and damaging to the archdiocese, especially since New York has so few black priests in senior positions.

Monsignor White was arrested along with another man after allegedly buying cocaine from an undercover officer in the Jackson Heights section of Queens. He pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor narcotics possession charge in Queens criminal court yesterday and was released on his own recognizance.

Monsignor White, who is from West Harlem, came late to the priesthood, spending much of his early career as a brother in the Catholic order of the Christian Brotherhood.

Catholic leaders and priests said they could not recall any similar cases of a New York priest arrested on drug charges, and they were struggling to absorb the news. Last night, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the West Harlem parish where Monsignor White said his first Mass and where his brother taught for years, a friend, Father Thomas Fenlon, was composing a new church bulletin that addressed the monsignor's troubles. ''I was just writing in the bulletin that we support him with our prayers,'' Father Fenlon said.

I just can't understand why those people are even allowed to give themselves such misleading names. Say what you like about that Hussein Osama boy, but at least his name warns you what to expect. I mean, I don't go around calling myself Brother Gollywog now do I?

And what to do the secular courts do about the Catholic cult? They SHELTER it!

In Oregon priests of the Catholic Church have been convicted of so many crimes that the "diocese" of the Church is officially bankrupt. But does the state seize Church property and sell it to pay for the lawless cult's spiraling legal penalties and judgments against it? NOOOOO!

According to the Church, the diocese really doesn't own those properties worth millions and millions of dollars...by some goofy card trick they're "owned" by the "parish" instead. And so, according to the cult lawyers, the diocese can go bankrupt and still keep property worth several large fortunes.

And the secular courts let the Catholic cult get away with it! You'd think this was the Middle Ages!

In betwen celebrating Black Masses up and down the East Coast of the US, Pope Benedryl XVI hour formula today said that the epidemic of priests raping choirboys (which the Catholics call the "clergy sex scandal" as if, by not mentioning that thousands of priests were raping choirboys, people might not notice that particular detail) was "very badly handled."

Finally, we get some honesty from the Pope. Those choirboys were, indeed, handled, and it was very bad.
