Freehold City Council limits overnight parking in front of residences

jmccann@freeholdnews.com Parking in front of your neighbor’s house overnight is now against the law in Freehold.

City Council members on Monday night approved rules that limit parking on streets. Only people who live in or are visiting a home may park in front of it from 2 to 8 a.m. Residents or guests who park elsewhere can receive a citation, with a fine of up to $500.

City officials say they’ll only enforce the ordinance if they receive complaints.

Council members said there is a problem with the number of cars parked on streets, which inconvenience residents and create safety hazards. But not all agreed that the new ordinance was the best solution. It was approved 5-2, with Don Alliston and James Stewart voting against it.

“I’m not sure this gets us where we want to be,” Mr. Alliston said. “I’d sure like to get the cars off the streets.”

Mayor Mitch Mitchell said the ordinance should solve many of the problems that council members hear about, primarily that neighbors’ cars make it impossible for residents and their guests to find on-street parking.

This new parking policy is going to be a big relief to Freehold resident Martha Miller:
"I'm so glad that the city council listened to my complaints. I wish that it hadn't come to this, but my neighbor Bill E. drove me to it. I couldn't even park in front of my own house because my neighbor would park there to avoid the tree sap that dripped onto his car. Some days there were no other parking spaces and I was forced to park in front of HIS house under HIS messy tree. After seven years of complaining and parking under his tree I just got fed up and contacted my council member (Bud Smith Jr.) who helped write this ordinance and get it inacted.

The neighbor Bill E. was given a chance to respond, but only issued this statement, "The street's public property and anyone can park there. That old goosestepper is always complaining about something. I'm afraid to guess what she's going to complain about next."

Doesn't the Freehold City Council have anything better to do. This is a waste of time and money. It's going to be almost impossible to enforce and just going to pit neighbor against neighbor. Why doesn't they work on shutting down all the slums around the Spring Valley and Jenkins flats areas. Those ghettos are what is really bringing down property values.

What about those who live in the Renaissance Rowhouses, like Nurse Clampett? They have only a one-car garage, with an 18-foot driveway, and the lots are only 25 feet wide. That provides parking for exactly three cars . . . which means that if Nurse Clampett and her husband have more than one friend over for a morning prayer meeting, all but one of the friends gets fined $500!

We need to fight this! Nurse Clampett makes the best fresh scones ever hosts such rousing and inspiring weekly prayer meetings from 5 - 7 am!

This has got to be unconstitutional! The streets are public property that we all pay taxes to support. Now some weasels on the council have decided we can't use it to park our cars. That's a prime example on how are rights are taken away – little by little. Next thing you know someone is going to tell us we can't drive on them. It's just like the history of gun control.

While we are on the subject of that useless town council (I'm taking names for the next election), when are they going to get around to enacting a noise ordinance. That Bramson kid and his souped up car is really annoying every time he drives by – and some of the motorcycle owners here (who shall remain nameless) have been playing around with their mufflers as well. And I'm also sick of those loud car stereos. We should just confiscate the offending vehicles and sell them to lower our taxes.

Here in Gibeah Hill, the Homeowners' Association has long had a similar rule. We also have rules about what kinds of vehicles are allowed to be parked on streets owned by the HOA. We all had a good laugh when the Wilkinsons' son had guests over and one of them stepped out of the house just in time to see that his Mini Cooper was about to be towed.

Look the ordinance is no big deal, just do what I do and park your Humvees in the front hard. That way your town sedan and good SUV aren't blocked in your drive way.

How wide is your yard, brother BJ? You can probably fit a lot of cars on that lot.

The main problem with parking your car on the front yard is when the weeds grow up around the car if it's not driven regularly. Weeds can really grow fast.

All I know is, I can not sleep at night with a car parked in front of my home. Also, I've noticed almost none of them have Freehold vanity plates, they are all those white ones, that begin with the letter 'G'. Most of them are vans for carpet cleaning or telephone services I have never heard of.
Should not a family be in their home at sundown unless on emergency Church business, for example like when Miss Tulip was having those flashes last week and we men folk had to massage the devil out of her all night. Well, and poker night. Oh yeah, female Salvation night when we cruise the strip looking for lost souls.

There has been a car parked outside for four days, now. It has a flat tire and the leaves are collecting around it. I can even see where the street sweeper has had to go around. I made a call today about this car parked in front of my house. I hope that it gets towed tomorrow so I can have a clear view of the street, again.

Brother Bryan may be on to something here but I fear he hasn't gone far enough.

I blame this all on the tragic use of secret ballots at election time. If we did away with that abonmination, we would surely be able to have some real say on who is elected to the council.

I for one would gladly volunteer as a poll worker to assist all residents in casting their ballots.

The neighbors had ANOTHER car with a flat tire there for several days. It appeared abandoned, so I called the Freehold PD to report it. Later that day there was a 72 hour notice posted on it, and the car was towed three days later. It never returned, so I'm assuming that people just like to abandon their useless cars in my neighborhood. I don't know what I'd do without the help of the police to take care of this problem.

You know Brother Nobar, I bet the car was stolen! I had a pickup stolen once and it got a bunch of parking tickets before the police bothered to see why it was there. You should of just called Officer Richards.

That's possible. There have been a number of auto thefts in my neighborhood this year. I'd like to see more police presence, but we just don't get the same priority as the nicer neighborhoods.

Yes I do remember that white Nissan Stanza well Brother Nobar. The owner was Jenny Huisentrue, I remember from checking her license at the security guard check point. She is another one of those ever so nosy big city reporters here in Freehold to do one of the investigative reports on our "cult". So she abandoned her car and turned up missing, you don't say?

Hope nothing bad happened to Miss Huisentrue like she was kidnapped and sold for about $10,000 USD to some Japanese business men looking for some Caucasian woman with big breasts to debauch themselves on. Terrible things do happen to people.
