Why was Jesus Circumcised? -
01-04-2010, 07:15 PM
Luke 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Friends, this verse has me confounded.
Why was Jesus circumcised?
Well, that's not really the correct question. The correct question was:
Why did Jesus need to be circumcised?
If Jesus needed to be circumcised, that means he was born with a foreskin.
Let's look into the history of Circumcision. Abraham was the first guy to whack off part of his peepee (that we know of). (Genesis 17:13) He did it as a symbol of the everlasting covenant.
So, Jesus when Jesus was born he was 100% God and 100% man. He had no sin. He was/is the covenant. Since he was born without sin, I would think that he would have been born without a foreskin.

As always, context is important. keep reading and you will find:
Quote:
And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
Luke 2:39
|
As we all know, the applicable law of the Lord at the time of Jesus's birth was the Old Testament. We find the applicable law here:
Quote:
9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Genesis 17:9-14
|
If Jesus had not been circumcised, he would have "broken [God's] covenant." this would have cast him out from the people and he would not have been seen as the Messiah.
I hope this helps!

But brother, why would God be born with a foreskin? Wasn't he perfect? If so, then I'd assume the Rabbi/Priest guy doing the trimming would have been flummoxed as the child in front of him wouldn't have a foreskin.
Shouldn't Jesus (who WAS the NEW COVENANT) have been born perfect according to the OLD Covenant?
There should be an anecdotal story in the Bible (KJV1611) about how the priest said "this boy doesn't have a foreskin".

The God part of him WAS perfect, but as you said, he was also 100% human, too. As such he had to be born as a man and go through the human experience. That God decided to come and live as a human among us is the greatest gift we have ever received. This is just a sign that he wanted teh full human experience, circumcision and all!

Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
How can God increase in wisdom?
This verse implies that God isn't 100% wise.
So, not only was Jesus born imperfect with a foreskin, he was also born not completely wise.
Sometimes, I just don't understand my LORD.

I know it is hard, but you KNOW that EVERY WORD of the Bible is TRUE. It was 100% wise of God to decide that the Jesus part of himself would not be 100% wise. For example, why didn't Jesus pop out and start talking right away? If he was 100% wise, he could have come out of the womb and spoken to anyone in their native tongue. For that matter, as soon as he was born, he could have spread word about the scientific method or even just told people not to store their food next to their waste piles and in the process, Baby Jesus would have saved millions if not biullions of lives by introducing basic hygine. That he did not means that GOD knows that the wisest thing to do as Jesus was to live just AS IF he were an ignorant, bronze-age, desert-dweller. He wasn't but he gave every impression that he was so that no-one could tell the difference until the Bible tells us he grew older, went to school and started stumping his teachers.
God knows best. Stop asking questions.

This is like God's sacrifice of His only son to make sure Abraham couldn't on up God with Abraham's attempted sacrifice of Isaac. God just didn't sacrifice a human forskin to keep His own convent, God sacrificed Jesus' perfect forskin. Children grow in knowledge, so as Jesus God kicked up an notch by making His own perfect knowledge even better. God needed to go threw every step of man's life and show us how it is really done.

The verse is clear. Jesus increased in stature in the eyes of those surrounding Him. His family had been looking for who they thought was a helpless child. They were then surprised to find Him conversing with doctors, safe in a temple. From this point they could be sure their child was wise and safe.

I don't think it says anywhere in the Bible that the foreskin is imperfect or evil. God simply tells Abraham to snip his tallywhacker (Abraham's, not God's) , " and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you" (Genesis 17,11).
The interesting part is, what would have happened to Jesus if he had died before being circumcised -- i.e. if Herod had succeeded in killing Baby Jesus, or if the virgin Mary had spontaneously aborted Jesus.
In that case Jesus would have been outside the Old Covenant (not being circumcised) and outside the New Covenant (since Jesus hadn't established the New Covenant through His supreme sacrifice yet), which means that Baby Jesus would have gone straight to Hell!
1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1st Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

Regarding the possibility of Mary having a miscarriage, I had always thought that with baby Jesus in continual physical contact with her, that she would have experienced a continual healing effect, and therefore would have been impervious to disease or injury for the duration of the pregnancy. Perhaps even to the extent of Mary being able to withstand an atomic weapon.
Herod had no idea what he was up against . . .
Jud 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are un Godly among them of all their un Godly deeds which they have un Godly committed, and of all their hard [speeches] which un Godly sinners have spoken against him.

I've recently wondered if Jesus ever had a very dangerous (mortal) accident as a child, and then three days later he arose.
When Jesus was on the cross, he looked down and said:
John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
It doesn't say (in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John) if she (mary, mother of Jesus) was crying. Perhaps she had seen Jesus die before (in part of his life that isn't recorded) and she knew he'd come back.
Just some things to ponder.

We clearly have a bit more research to do on this issue. An ancient theologian has surmised that the rings around the planet Saturn are actually Christ Jesus' Holy Prepuce.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:
Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)
