Word is singular. Flesh is singular. The phrase "was made" is in the past tense. John is telling us that in the past, the Word was made flesh. I think you're failing to comprehend what John is saying.
Perhaps it would benefit you to revisit the 4th grade, specifically to learn basic English grammar.
