  • Sex on the Sabbath/Sunday? Evidence of how far morality has declined!

    Ladies,

I'm not going to go so far as to say you're all disgusting harlots who burn with lust and will destroy civilization with your pulsating loins, but I do notice morality is on a downward trend.

For example, take a look at the changing standards for when sex is acceptable and when it is a monstrous, God-mocking sin.

Here's how it was in medieval times. I've bolded the parts that have changed. We truly are slouching towards Gomorrah:
Penitentials were handbooks listing many sins a confessor could be expected to encounter….it’s the fornication that took up the lion’s share of these handbooks, and every conceivable act was detailed along with the (heavy) price it exacted in penance….The penitential writers saw marital sex as a concession, not as a right or even a gift from God.

This is Biblically-correct: read 1 Corinthians 7:25-31, and 1 Corinthians 7:36-40 in which Paul opposes hetrosexual marriage, but decides to allow it based on pure, grudging pragmatism: "if his passions are strong, and so it has to be, let him marry as he wishes" -1 Corinthians 7:36 (No, this logic does NOT apply to gay marriage, that's totally different!)
The pleasure it brought was inherently sinful, a gateway to lust, so sex within marriage should be carefully contained and scheduled to ensure the most possible procreation and the least possible pleasure. Married couples had to abstain regularly or the very state of their marriage would degenerate into an illegitimate and sinful union. Even the children born of sex during a period where the couple should have abstained — mainly based on the Church’s liturgical calendar and on the wife’s reproductive cycle — were to be considered bastards.

Without even noticing, we have been infiltrated by a modern liberal attitude that sex is okay on any night of the week - even on the 4th of July, George W Bush's birthday, or even the anniversary of 9/11!

See this flowchart for an example of the staunch morality of previous generations:

Now, of course of lot of those special days are Catholic nonsense that we should ignore. However, the basic concept is sound - we just need to choose different days to abstain.

No sex on the Sabbath/Sunday makes sense, because sex is supposed to be work, an ordeal we endure for the sake of creating babies. If it's not work you're doing it wrong!

Expect updates on other no-sex days soon. I'm about to meet with the Church elders and I'll be suggesting that Saturdays also be a no sex-day (I've got a headache, okay?)

Do take under consideration that, as proven by the light penitence given to stoning offenses, that it is a cat-a-lick softy set of rules.

And we wouldn't want GOD to think we're soft, would we?

On a different note I have noticed that in Freehold the weather often hides the sun and it's a bit of a hit or miss if it's still/already day/night. That should be clear so no wife will pester her husband at inappropriate times.

    Ecclesiastes 3:1

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

    PRAISE THE LORD!

Rules and enforcement are different issues, let's not go off topic.

And while I would accuse the medieval Catholic Church of many things, lenient punishment is not one of them.

      Lots of similar pictures here.

I mean, "say a bunch of hail Marys" may not sound like much to modern ears, but consider the unsaid context: "say a bunch of hail Marys, and make sure you say them loud enough for the inquisitors to hear…."

Oh, what the heck, let's talk about punishment. It's a dry book and punishment makes sex….Interesting.

Does anybody know exactly what "fast" means in this context? I thought "fast" means no food at all, but obviously that's impossible to do for 10 years:

Whoever fornicates with an effeminate male or with another man or with an animal must fast for 10 years.
        -S74.01.02

I assume "fornicates" doesn't mean "lay with", it means doing anything sexually pleasurable. "Laying with" a man is a death penalty crime in the Bible, but lesser forms of fornication (say, a baseball team whose butt-slaps are too gentle to be properly macho) calls for lesser punishments.

And by "repent", what action are we talking about, exactly?
Whoever ejaculates seed into the mouth, that is the worst evil. From someone it was judged that they repent this up to the end of their lives. -S75.04.01

I can just see some priest saying "You say you're sorry? You don't SOUND sorry. I'LL make you sorry!"

It has to mean something, because the punishment for oral is tougher than the punishment for murder:
The murderer does penance for 10 years or 7 years. - S76.02.02 I

The 'fasting' is explained a little here.
S33.04.02 And he who must (fast) one week on bread and water, let him sing 300 psalms kneeling or 320 without genuflecting just as it is said above.
S33.05.01 And he who must do penance for the period of a month on bread and water, let him sing 1200 psalms with genuflection, and without genuflection 1680.
S33.05.02 And afterwards every day he may feed himself at midday except on Wednesday and Friday, when he must fast until nones and abstain from meat and wine--that is, any kind of drink (with) which one can become intoxicated.
S33.05.03 And let him enjoy other foods such as God may give to him, after that which he has sung.
          ....
S33.07.01 And he who must do such a penance for a year, then let him give 26 shillings in alms and in every week fast two days, just as it is said above, and consider during the three fasting periods what his sustenance should be and give half of it in alms.
S33.08.01 In the second year he is allowed to lighten his penance from Christmas to the Twelfth Day and from Easter to Pentecost.

Punishment via malnutrition. That sounds reasonable. After 10 years of nothing but bread and water, if you're still alive you'd have such bad scurvy that your teeth would have all fallen out.

Wait, wouldn't that just improve the oral sex?

How could one find sex pleasurable? It's a messy and unclean act. It should only be used to make another soldier for God, not pleasure!

It's also used to keep your husband happy, as we know that men have needs that we don't share.
