I was reminded how Jesus Himself confirmed that poisonous things show how much He loves us.

Mark 16:15-19 And [Jesus] said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Here we have Jesus explaining about poisonous things. Obviously people who get poisoned by venomous creatures have rejected God and deny the power of The Holy Ghost. These wretches tell us there's no Heaven and point to Jesus having to travel "up" to get there as evidence for their claim that The Gospels are fraudulent since "ascending" would get you to outer space, not Heaven, and therefore the authors were lying when they claimed this. Luke, however.—.a doctor.—.confirms the words of Jesus and as a professional knew the sorts of problems Jesus addressed.

Luke 10:18-19 And he [Jesus] said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
There are false "churches" out there who aren't prepared to take Jesus at His word. They want to put Him to the test by actually grabbing hold of snakes! Well maybe a snake's about as likely to bite you as a cat, if you pick that up, unless you hurt it. So a pretty safe bet.


Walking »crunch« »crunch« through a trough of scorpions would be something else altogether. Do they do that? No. Or quaff a pint of prussic acid. No? That's called hypocrisy. God was explicit that these activities were not to be celebrated. The thing to rejoice over is that our names have been written in Heaven. Serendipitous contact is covered, however.

THE SHIPWRECK
Acts 27:13 – 28:5 When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete. But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.….And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

Paul reassured the captain that no lives would be lost. He said:

I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.….And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.….And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land. When they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.….And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. When the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

Quite an adventure! But notice how Paul's witness was confirmed by God; he didn't go looking for venomous beasts to mess around with or eat a few death caps for effect. His primary message was God's promise that all would survive. The thing to celebrate was that they all did survive even though.—.quite understandably.—.the soldiers wanted to shoot everyone. As it happens, Paul was bitten. The bite had no effect NOT because Paul was showing off but because God had promised to get him to Rome. I see in these last days however that widow spiders are even attacking serpents. After a few nips the convulsions cease, the heart stops beating and Mrs Spider is ready for supper.
