Swedish Baptists merge with Methodists, Mission Covenant Church for better future

Baptists would have faced 'a very difficult situation and future' in Sweden if they had not chosen to merge with the Methodists and Mission Covenant Church.

Sören Carlsvärd, general secretary and president of the Baptist Union of Sweden, in an exclusive interview with The Baptist Times, said that the Joint Future Church, of which Baptists will now be part of, would ensure that they would have a brighter future.

'I am very enthusiastic for the new church,' Mr Carlsvärd said. 'If we weren't building a new church denomination with the Mission Church and Methodists, Baptists would be facing a very difficult situation and future.

'I have this hope that the church will grow. We have more resources now to do something for the future. We have a vision to make and plant new churches and help people to be Christians.'

The three denominations have been in discussions since 1978. In 1992 they formed one seminary for ministerial training and in 2006 held their first annual conference together.

In 2011 they agreed merging the three denominations together from January 2012. New leadership for the church were chosen at their annual conference this May and on 1 June all personnel moved together into a new office.

The Baptist Union of Sweden will be a member of the European Baptist Federation and Baptist World Alliance until 2014. After that the Joint Future Church will then be in membership with both.

In a wide ranging interview, Mr Carlsvärd talked about the challenges facing the church in a secular society, the dramatic demise of the state Lutheran Church and how they have handled same sex marriage becoming law in Sweden.
Can you imagine that? Baptists joining together with Methodist and Mission false Christians to support fag marriage? How dare they?! This for one is something that will never happen with Landover. I hope that Pastor Zeke will force them to get rid of their Baptist label for doing this!
